Unit Communications ManagerThe Unit Communications Manager (UCM) serves as the principal technical advisor and administrator for all communication, information technology (IT), and cryptographic systems within a Department of War (DoW) unit. Operating under an Impact Level 5 (ILS) environment, this role oversees the lifecycle of hardware, software, and secure networks. The UCM ensures unit readiness by directly managing NIPR, SIPR, and JWICS node logistics, coordinating COMSEC (Cryptographic Security) keying material, and maintaining strict inventory control over tactical communications gear.Key responsibilities include coordinating with Base Communications Squadrons (BCS) and Enterprise Service Desks for the provisioning, installation, and troubleshooting of NIPR, SIPR, and JWICS accounts, workstations, and network drops.
Manage the operational readiness of land mobile radios (LMRs), tactical satellite systems (TACSAT), and ultra-high frequency (UHF/VHF) radios. Coordinate field-level maintenance and testing. Serve as the Unit Cryptographic Security (COMSEC) Responsible Officer (CRO).
Coordinate the receipt, distribution, physical safeguarding, destruction, and loading of cryptographic keying material (KYK-13, SKL). Direct the IT Asset Management (ITAM) program. Maintain 100% accountability for all communications electronics (CE) assets, server racks, user endpoints, and secure peripherals.
Partner with cybersecurity personnel to identify network vulnerabilities, verify compliance with Information Assurance Vulnerability Alerts (IAVAs), and assist with cybersecurity mitigation strategies.
