General Purpose

The Principal provides dynamic, responsive, collaborative, and forward‑thinking vision and leadership as part of the district administrative team to promote a learning environment in which each student is seen, valued, and served. This includes proactive educational leadership, guiding professional teaching and support staff, and working with professional learning communities and school leadership teams.

Essential Functions

  • Create, establish, and sustain a school culture conducive to continuous improvement for students and staff.
  • Ensure safety protocols are known, reviewed, and practiced on a regular basis by leading the development and annual update of a comprehensive safety plan that includes prevention, intervention, crisis recovery, and response.
  • Build and sustain a culture of belonging and inclusion.
  • Advocate for equity providing for students' and families' educational needs so each student can meet educational expectations.
  • Model and support the principles of adult learning and a data‑driven culture.
  • Collaborate in and support the implementation of secondary SEL (Social and Emotional Learning) standards, strategies, and curriculum to create and sustain a culture of physical, mental and social‑emotional wellness.
  • Provide leadership and support to staff in building standards‑based learning practices in instruction, assessment, and reporting.
  • Create and implement an annual MTSS (Multi‑Tiered System of Supports) action plan through collaboration and shared leadership.
  • Manage human and fiscal resources in an ethical and equitable way to accomplish district, school, and student achievement goals.
  • Engage in ongoing learning and provide leadership to support Universal Design for Learning, trauma‑informed practices, and culturally responsive instruction in inclusive settings.
  • Monitor, assist, and evaluate staff implementation of the Problem of Practice/Theory of Action plan and effective instruction.
  • Engage and partner with the entire learning community and advocate to provide for students' and families' educational needs so every student can meet educational expectations.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to closing the achievement gap for all students.
  • Utilize evaluation and observation protocols aligned to progress monitoring to develop staff expertise and skill.
  • Facilitate the development and implementation of a professional learning plan for staff.
  • Other related duties as assigned by the Director of Secondary Education for the successful operations of the superintendent's office and the district.

Other Responsibilities

  • Work successfully as a contributing member of the district administrative team and as a leader in a school‑wide professional learning community.
  • Participate in the annual administrative planning pertaining to the opening of school information and calendars, orientation meetings, in‑service and staff development programs and workshops, faculty meetings, steering committee meetings, and end‑of‑school‑year information.
  • Plan the development and supervision of building orientation programs for teachers and students.
  • Participate as part of the middle school principal team and take on leadership related to sharing responsibilities across the district.

Qualifications

  • Current Washington State Certificate with Principal endorsement.
  • At least five years of successful teaching experience at the middle school level.
  • Previous administrative experience, preferably at the middle school level.
  • Experience in creating a common purpose of service and teamwork among all employees in order that the mission of the Camas School District is achieved.
  • Experience in the middle school program and philosophy.
  • Experience in personnel management, evaluation, and instructional leadership including techniques in supervision.
  • Experience in pupil/personnel services and human relations skills.
  • Effective communication through written and oral materials which convey the ideas, thoughts, and needs of an organization and its personnel.
  • Experience in curriculum development and program evaluation.
  • Experience in goal setting and assisting staff members in reaching their potential.
  • Variety of broad educational job experiences.
  • Advanced ability to use technology as an effective communication, planning, and instructional tool.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the board may find appropriate and acceptable.

Physical Requirements / Environmental Conditions

1. Requires prolonged sitting or standing.

2. Requires the ability to physically assist and/or lift students, up to 50 pounds.

3. Stoop, bend, walk, run, all at an effective pace.

4. Must work in noisy and sometimes crowded environments.

5. Travel to other district schools and facilities.

6. Working evenings and weekends on occasion.

School Employee Benefit Board (SEBB) Eligibility

All eligibility determinations are based on rules in Chapters 182‑30 and 182‑31 of the Washington Administrative Code (WAC). If the position is anticipated to work a minimum of 630 hours in a school year, then that position would be deemed benefit eligible. SEBB benefits include medical, vision, dental, long‑term disability and life insurance. Supplemental coverages are also available.

Retirement Eligibility

A certificated position participates in the Teacher Retirement System (TRS) which requires at least 5 months of 70 or more hours of compensated employment during a school year to be eligible for Washington State Retirement. A classified position participates in the School Employee Retirement System (SERS) if the position is expected to require at least 5 months of 70 hours or more for two consecutive years (initially) of employment.
