Mid‑Level Mechanical Engineer – Power & Energy

WSP is seeking a Mid‑Level Mechanical Engineer to join our Power & Energy team in Houston, TX. The role involves designing mechanical piping and equipment for renewable and fossil power generation facilities, preparing specifications and data sheets, reviewing vendor drawings and parameters, and ensuring effective communication across disciplines.

Location

Primary location: Houston, TX. Additional locations: Seattle, WA; Boise, ID; Overland Park, KS; Atlanta, GA; Oradell, NJ; Mt. Laurel, NJ.

Responsibilities

  • Design mechanical piping and equipment for renewable and fossil power generation facilities.
  • Prepare mechanical equipment and packaged equipment specifications, data sheets, RFQs, and technical bid evaluations.
  • Review mechanical equipment vendor drawings and data; interface with suppliers, clients, other engineering disciplines, and detailers/designers.
  • Ensure effective communications with other engineering disciplines.
  • Prepare construction/installation scopes of work for mechanical systems.
  • Participate in the development of PFD’s and P&ID's.
  • Perform piping design activities including sizing, pressure drop calculations, stress analysis, and pipe support design.
  • Work independently or as part of a cross‑functional team to execute project work, calculate costs and quantities, and ensure compliance with specifications and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate measurements, statistical analysis, and reporting.
  • Assist with development and scoping of medium‑sized projects.
  • Provide guidance and training to entry‑level engineers.
  • Prepare technical reports and presentations that explain research findings and recommendations.
  • Assist in the analysis, evaluation, and interpretation of field investigation data, developing action plans for risk installation and mitigation.
  • Prepare and implement site Health and Safety Plans (HASPs).
  • Comply with regulatory requirements related to data integrity, documentation, training, monitoring systems, and record compliance.
  • Remain current with latest mechanical engineering techniques and practices.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct in accordance with WSP’s Code of Conduct.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or closely related discipline.
  • 5+ years of post‑education experience in mechanical design for industrial facilities.
  • Engineer in Training certification.
  • Working knowledge of MicroStation or AutoCAD.
  • Working knowledge of SmartPlant 3D or CADworx.
  • Experience using Caesar II or AutoPipe.
  • Experience using Thermoflow.
  • Knowledge of relevant mechanical system and construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record‑keeping requirements.
  • Ability to perform technical computations and calculations involving engineering principles and regulatory comparison.
  • Project management experience with small to mid‑level projects, including tracking hours and expenses.
  • Ability to plan and conduct inspections and investigations of construction and design aspects.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills for engineering and non‑engineering audiences.
  • Strong self‑leadership, attention to detail, multi‑tasking, and prioritization in a dynamic environment.
  • Ability to work independently and provide guidance to junior team members while adhering to QA/QC.
  • Developed critical thinking and problem‑solving skills for testing results, data collation, load calculations, and statistical analysis.
  • Ability to assertively direct others to complete tasks safely and efficiently.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and abidance with WSP’s health, safety, and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Availability to work schedules that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Engineering.
  • Professional licensure or certification.
  • Power plant design experience.
  • Renewable natural gas plant design experience.

Compensation

Expected Salary (all locations): $86,100 – $150,950. WSP reserves the right to pay within or outside the posted range based on qualifications, experience, and market conditions.
