We are seeking a Microsoft 365 Copilot & Purview Data Security Specialist to lead the secure enablement of Copilot across the organization. This role will focus heavily on SharePoint and OneDrive environments, ensuring sensitive data is properly classified, governed, and protected before and during Copilot deployment.
This individual will play a critical role in defining data security frameworks, implementing Microsoft Purview capabilities, and educating stakeholders on data classification and labeling best practices.

Overview
We are seeking a Microsoft 365 Copilot & Purview Data Security Specialist to lead the secure enablement of Copilot across the organization. This role will focus heavily on SharePoint and OneDrive environments, ensuring sensitive data is properly classified, governed, and protected before and during Copilot deployment.
This individual will play a critical role in defining data security frameworks, implementing Microsoft Purview capabilities, and educating stakeholders on data classification and labeling best practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the transition from free Copilot to enterprise (paid) Copilot, ensuring secure and compliant implementation
- Assess and structure SharePoint and OneDrive environments to ensure Copilot only accesses appropriate content
- Prevent unintended exposure of internal documents and sensitive information through Copilot
- Leverage Microsoft Purview to:
- Identify and classify sensitive data (PII, confidential information, etc.)
- Define and enforce data governance and security policies
- Implement sensitivity labels and data protection controls
- Develop and maintain a data classification framework , including:
- Defining what constitutes confidential and sensitive data
- Establishing labeling standards and taxonomy
- Design and execute simulation/testing scenarios to validate data security controls and Copilot behavior
- Conduct file mapping and data discovery efforts across M365 environments
- Lead user education and change management , including:
- Training teams on sensitivity labels and data handling practices
- Explaining labeling meanings and proper usage
- Defining who can create, edit, and apply labels-and how
- Collaborate with IT, Security, and Compliance teams to align on data security strategy and governance
- Hands-on experience with:
- Microsoft Purview (Data Loss Prevention, Information Protection, sensitivity labeling)
- Microsoft 365 Copilot (or readiness/implementation initiatives)
- SharePoint Online and OneDrive governance
- Strong understanding of:
- Data classification frameworks and governance best practices
- Data security, compliance, and privacy (PII handling, confidential data controls)
- File mapping and data discovery strategies
- Experience implementing or managing:
- Sensitivity labels and labeling policies
- Data security controls in M365 environments
- Experience designing or testing Copilot/security simulations
- Background in data governance, compliance, or information security programs
- Familiarity with enterprise change management and user training initiatives
