Responsibilities
- Perform appropriate and complete gross dissection and description of surgical pathology specimens, assist pathologists with OR consultations and frozen sections, ensure all specimens have correct source designation and appropriate charges, demonstrate competency in gross prosection of all types of specimens and maintain specimen integrity at all times to minimize potential for contamination and identification errors.
- Oversee the daily operations of the anatomic pathology department, including the office staff, histology, pathologist's assistants and cytology staff.
- Document job performance, set goals for personnel, ensure all staff is up to date with departmental procedures, and keep track of budgets for reagents and staff salaries.
Qualifications
- Education : Bachelor's Degree in Health Sciences with a Histotechnologist, HTL(ASCP) certification, or Cytotechnologist certification, or equivalent, or graduate of an AAPA approved Pathologists' Assistant program. Master's Degree in Health Sciences or business administration preferred.
- Experience : 10 years of laboratory work in anatomic pathology with at least 5 years of managerial or professional/supervisory experience in a healthcare setting.
- Licensure : Histotechnologist, HTL(ASCP) certification, or Cytotechnologist, CT (ASCP) certification, PA certification (ASCP) or equivalent.
- Special Skills : Excellent interpersonal communication skills to work closely with staff, patients and providers and provide assistance to Administrative Director, Director of Pathology, Pathologists and Medical Staff as needed; assertive and creative problem-solving ability by identifying problem areas affecting customer/patient issues and departmental quality and efficiency.
- Physical Demand : Lifting of medium weight objects, intense concentration with computers and procedures, use of sharp objects (scalpels, microtome blades) and exposure to known carcinogens (formaldehyde, xylene).
