Medical Technologist I – Per Diem

A medical technologist is a highly skilled health professional who tests and analyzes blood and other body substances to aid health care providers in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. Responsibilities include operating and maintaining laboratory equipment and ensuring that automated and manual tests are completed accurately and promptly.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Analyze and test specimens, including proficiency testing and manual procedures, and report results according to protocol.
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and manage complex laboratory equipment.
  • Utilize complex information systems to collect and interpret data.
  • Perform and interpret quality control procedures.
  • Maintain a compliant environment, adhering to all lab and hospital procedures, NYS, TJC, HIPAA standards, infection control, and safety guidelines.
  • Participate in quality assurance and performance improvement activities, maintaining inter‑ and intra‑departmental workflow by cooperating with others.
  • Remain flexible in assuming additional responsibilities as assigned.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Meets NYS Department of Health requirements and is currently licensed as a Clinical Lab Scientist.
  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology (or equivalent) and registration as a Medical Technologist/Clinical Lab Scientist by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Prior laboratory experience is preferred, but not required.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize work, manage time effectively, and adapt to changing work volumes.
  • Strong problem‑solving ability and attention to detail.

Physical Requirements

  • May require light lifting and carrying, including boxes and equipment, up to 30 pounds.
  • Repetitive use of hands (e.g., computer keyboard), sitting, walking, or standing for long periods.
  • Must be physically able to operate automation used in the job.

Location and Travel Requirements

  • Onsite.

Compensation

  • $33.75 – $49.50 per hour.
