Responsibilities

  • Provide quality and rapid lab results by applying knowledge of laboratory analyses, proper procedures, equipment, and safety protocols.
  • Follow specimen collection, handling, and processing procedures; perform test analyses, report results, and maintain accurate records.
  • Adhere to quality control policies, documenting all quality control activities, instrument calibrations, and maintenance.
  • Order lab, x‑ray, and medical supplies using the medical record system per written or verbal orders of the Physician.
  • Assist Physicians, Extenders, and Nurses with patient treatment and care: locating patients, taking vital signs, triaging, assessing problems, and preparing patients for physicals and medical treatment.
  • Handle Physician, Extender, and Nurse requests promptly and respectfully.
  • Implement corrective action procedures when test systems fall outside acceptable performance levels, and document all actions.
  • Identify and troubleshoot problems affecting test performance or reporting; notify the Lab Supervisor, Lab Consultant, or Director of Laboratory Services as needed.
  • Perform duties associated with all checklists for the position and use correct medical terminology.
  • Keep informed about new policies and procedures and implement them as directed.
  • Sterilize and set up instruments, stock the lab and treatment area, handle laundry, and maintain cleanliness of the treatment area and other necessary areas.
  • Attend all mandatory training and continuing education classes (e.g., CPR, code drills).
  • Attend staff meetings as directed.
  • Be willing to work at any center as required to support staffing or emergency needs.
  • Be available to assist during breaks and mealtimes, as needed to provide patient care or maintain center operations.
  • Understand and use the medical record system for patient processing, ordering and reporting lab tests, and managing hardware/software issues.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and externs during on‑job training; perform duties defined in the checklist within the assigned shift.
  • Operate, maintain, and use medical and office equipment as trained; participate in maintenance assignments when necessary.
  • Carry out other duties as directed.

Qualifications

  • Employee must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Ability to communicate well verbally and in writing; minimum typing experience.
  • High school graduate (or equivalent) and one of the following:
    • Minimum 60 semester hours of college coursework in chemistry, biology, and medical laboratory techniques.
    • Associate or bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical laboratory technology.
    • One‑year documented technician training in a formal program appropriate for the testing performed.
    • Fifty‑week military Medical Laboratory Procedures course and held the military enlisted occupational specialty of “Medical Laboratory Specialist.”
  • Provide written documentation of training.
  • Two years of experience in clinical laboratory testing preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of medical technology principles, concepts, and methodologies to perform a broad range of tests.
  • Knowledge of mathematical and statistical methods to calculate and convert analytical data to test results.
  • Ability to produce rapid, reliable, quality results during high‑volume periods (≥100 patients per day).
  • Proficiency in using and maintaining laboratory instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of related disciplines to integrate and correlate test results with other laboratory data and clinical information.
  • Understanding of laboratory science and application in comprehensive analytical correlations.
  • Proficiency in performing venipuncture, fingerstick collections, and drug screen collections.
  • Annual CPR certification.
  • Ability to hear pages, bells, and phone systems.
  • Ability to sit, stand, and walk for long periods (4–7 hours at a time).
  • Ability to lift moderately heavy items (20–50lbs).
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize work, and take initiative based on varying volume and dynamic situations.
