Job Summary

Under the general supervision of a Supervisor, Manager or Director, perform clinical laboratory testing pursuant to established protocols while exercising independent judgment and responsibility. Maintain equipment and records, perform quality assurance activities related to test performance, and may supervise and teach within the laboratory setting. Key competencies include accuracy in patient, quality assurance, proficiency, and competency testing; critical thinking; job knowledge; productivity; and communication.

Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions

• Maintain acceptable accuracy in patient, quality assurance, proficiency, and competency testing, including correct specimen identification, acceptable error rate, and proper documentation of QA failures or trends.
• Earn acceptable scores in proficiency testing and personnel competency testing.
• Maintain instrumentation for testing.
• Report lab data accurately and within established turnaround times and productivity standards.
• Recognize the relationship between lab data and clinical findings or expectations.
• Interpret information from multiple sources.
• Apply the Pending Log procedure for tracking laboratory test status.
• Document, in the LIS, all elements of the Notification Value Call procedure.
• Follow the department procedure and chain of command for handing off information.
• Adhere consistently to WellStar Standards of Behavior.
• Take personal responsibility for corrective action on constructive criticism.
• Assist in the analysis of new testing methods, including correlations and procedure writing.
• Assist in inspection preparation and participate in laboratory performance improvement initiatives.
• Practice cost‑efficient work processes that maintain high‑quality laboratory data.
• Maintain current knowledge of WellStar policies and procedures, including LIS.
• Demonstrate adequate knowledge of laboratory regulatory compliance.
• Practice all WellStar and Laboratory Safety Standards.
• Participate in meetings, committees, task forces, and project teams.
• Complete monthly, quarterly, or yearly educational requirements.
• Comply with all WellStar Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.

Required Minimum Education

• Bachelor’s in Medical Technology, Medical Science, General studies, or a relevant master’s degree (preferred).

• MT(ASCP) – Medical Technologist
• MT(AMT) – Medical Technologist
• MT(AAB) – Medical Technologist
• MT(HEW) – Medical Technologist
• MLS(ASCP) – Medical Laboratory Scientist
• MLS(AMT) – Medical Laboratory Scientist
• MB(ASCP) – Molecular Biologist (American Society for Clinical Pathology)
• H(ASCP) – Hematology (American Society for Clinical Pathology)

Required Minimum Experience

Minimum 1 year of laboratory experience (preferred).

Required Minimum Skills

• Computer/data entry experience.
• Strong communication skills with various members of the healthcare team.
• Proficiency in Excel, Word, and basic computer operations.
• Experience with Epic and 3M preferred.
