General Summary

Responsible for the analysis of laboratory specimens and subsequent result reporting according to laboratory protocol and procedures.

Education, Licensure, Registration and Experience

• Associate’s degree (or equivalent) in a relevant science required.
• One year clinical laboratory internship preferred.
• MT/MLS(ASCP) or equivalent registration, or MT/MLS eligible under Medicare laboratory regulations.
• MLT (ASCP) or equivalent registration or MLT eligible under Medicare laboratory regulations.

Essential Functions

Performs accurate and appropriate testing of specimens received in the laboratory, according to established laboratory protocol and procedures. Evaluates specimens for acceptability, investigates and documents problems with unacceptable specimens, organizes workload for maximum efficiency, accurately performs tests ensuring correct patient encounter, verifies accuracy of results before reporting, and accurately performs testing on all proficiency testing specimens.

Reports test results in a timely manner and according to established laboratory protocol and procedures, including reports for stats, abnormalities, critical values, and other categories of special requests; documents special handling required for test results that meet outlying criteria; makes conscientious effort to ensure turnaround times that meet Chest Pain and Stroke Accreditation standards.

Follows established procedures for laboratory quality control, reports discrepancies to the Medical Technologist II or Director/Supervisor, performs appropriate quality control, accurately analyzes and evaluates QC results, records results obtained for quality control testing, and appropriately notifies supervisor of discrepant QC results or trends.

Performs daily, weekly, monthly, or as needed, maintenance on instruments and equipment as appropriate, performs calibration of equipment according to scheduled intervals, documents calibration, maintains appropriate supplies, records daily temperatures, and utilizes Emanate monitoring system properly.

Troubleshoots instruments, equipment, reagents, and patient specimens when problems occur, follows chain of command if unable to solve the problem, and documents steps taken during the troubleshooting process.

Complies with established laboratory and hospital policies for universal precautions and safety procedures, wears protective equipment when handling specimens, follows safety policies when using chemicals, reports safety hazards, and performs proper waste disposal, hand hygiene, and device storage as required.

Performs phlebotomy (venipunctures, fingersticks, heelsticks) as appropriate, accurately performs procedures, and ensures proper labeling and scanning of specimens at the bedside or chairside.

Attends all required safety training programs, completes Education Day, required in‑services, and other competency requirements, operates assigned equipment safely, maintains work area, and demonstrates proper body mechanics.

Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and employees, maintains confidentiality, presents neat appearance, and displays a “can do” attitude, using department‑specific scripting/AIDET as appropriate.

Promotes effective working relations, participates in quality assurance projects, leads or contributes to lean process improvement, promotes The Fisher‑Titus Way philosophy, participates in daily team huddle and staff meetings, and handles shift change responsibilities.

Maintains work area cleanliness, ensures supplies are sufficient, and assists with orientation of new laboratory employees.

Assists with orientation of laboratory procedures for students and/or new laboratory employees, and properly completes training checklists to ensure new employee competence.

Qualifications

• Associates or better in Health Services Administration.
• Preferred: Bachelors or better in Health Services Administration.
