This position qualifies for our UNC Health Wayne Incentive Program, which includes up to $20,000 commitment incentive.

Responsibilities

  • Performs tests on patient samples, completing complex critical analyses following written protocol.
  • Performs and analyzes quality control procedures.
  • Troubleshoots all procedures in the areas assigned.
  • Operates all instruments in the areas assigned.
  • Performs start‑up reagent loading and maintenance as required on various instrumentation.
  • Verifies and documents test results using EPIC or an appropriate laboratory system.
  • Confirms abnormal results and calls "critical values" to appropriate teammates.
  • Operates HIS and LIS technology proficiently.
  • Maintains work area in a clean and sanitary condition.
  • Assists in training new employees and students.
  • Informs supervisors of shortages of supplies or consumables.
  • Assists in writing procedures for the section.
  • Provides recommended services to all patients, understanding the needs of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent and geriatric patients and respecting cultural diversity.
  • May serve as technician in charge in the absence of the Director or Lead Technologist.
  • Completes continuing education and in‑service programs to meet regulatory and job requirements.
  • Actively participates in staff meetings.
  • Participates in performance improvement activities.
  • Presents a professional demeanor, establishes high customer service standards, supports responsibility, pride and teamwork, remains calm under pressure, and offers reasonable problem solutions.
  • Maintains a safe environment for self and teammates, applying universal precautions, personal protective equipment and infection‑control measures consistently.

Other Information

Education

Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline (Medical Technology, Laboratory, Chemical or Biological Science) required.

Licensure/Certification

Certification from ASCP preferred.

Experience

One year in an acute hospital setting preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the materials, procedures and instrumentation used in the section.
  • Good analytical skills and the ability to apply the theories and techniques of clinical laboratory science, including quality‑control evaluation, to produce reliable test results that aid clinicians in diagnosis and treatment.
  • Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English.
  • Proficient with LIS, HIS, EPIC and MS Office; able to learn new software rapidly.
  • Ability to stand and work on uncarpeted floors for a significant portion of the shift.

Valid NC Driver’s License: No.
