Position Summary
The Blood Bank Medical Technologist performs specialized laboratory procedures in the blood bank to ensure the safe and accurate preparation, testing, and distribution of blood and blood products. This role involves analyzing blood samples, performing compatibility testing, and maintaining compliance with regulatory standards to support patient care in transfusions and related therapies.
Essential Responsibilities
- Perform ABO/Rh typing, antibody screening, crossmatching, and other immunohematology tests to ensure compatibility of blood products for transfusion.
- Prepare, label, store, and issue blood components (red blood cells, platelets, plasma) while maintaining inventory levels and proper storage conditions.
- Conduct routine quality control checks on reagents, equipment, and blood products to ensure accuracy and compliance with standards set by AABB, FDA, CAP, and other regulatory bodies.
- Provide rapid and accurate blood product preparation during emergencies, including massive transfusion protocols.
- Maintain detailed and accurate records of test results, blood product usage, and patient information in accordance with regulatory and institutional policies.
- Calibrate, troubleshoot, and maintain laboratory equipment, reporting any malfunctions to the supervisor.
- Work closely with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to resolve complex transfusion‑related issues, such as unexpected antibodies or transfusion reactions.
- Adhere to safety protocols, infection control standards, and laboratory policies to ensure a safe working environment.
- Assist in training new staff or students and stay updated on advancements in blood banking through continuing education.
- Notify Blood Bank Supervisor of any unusual or unexpected results, participate in investigational and correlation studies as needed, transport specimens and reports as requested, and perform other related duties as required.
Required Education & Experience
- Associate’s degree in medical technology or related science AND at least 1 year of experience, OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or related science, completed within 6 months of start date, and 2 years in an accredited blood center or transfusion service.
Certifications & Licenses (Preferred)
- Generalist multi‑categorical certification (ASCP, NCA, or HEW) or equivalent.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of complex laboratory procedures.
- Knowledge of known risk and biohazards in the lab environment.
- Communication skills sufficient to clearly, completely, and accurately convey laboratory data verbally.
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary range: $22.12 – $31.01 per hour, based on qualifications.
