In addition, specific functions may change from time to time:Provides direction and guidance for questions and or problems referred by an MLT concerning specimen acceptability, unusual or discrepant results and instrument or method problemsPerforms accurate and appropriate testing of specimens received in the laboratory, according to established laboratory protocol and proceduresReports test results in a timely manner and according to established laboratory protocol and proceduresFollows established procedures for laboratory quality control.
Responsible for CAP, JCAHO and other regulatory agency standards.Performs daily, weekly, monthly, or as needed, maintenance on instruments and equipment as appropriateFollows established laboratory and hospital policies for universal precautions, safety, fire safety, disasters, exposure, blood borne and airborne pathogen, hazardous materials, and chain of custody procedures.Follows established hospital policies for maintaining a professional, responsible and courteous environment for patients, visitors and fellow employeesAssists with orientation of laboratory procedures for students and/or new laboratory employeesPerforms phlebotomy (as required by position and location) as appropriate for the patient requiring this procedureWhen requested, performs duties required to cover in Technical Specialist's absenceFloats to other laboratory sites as workload requires and as scheduledOther duties as assignedMinimum QualificationsThe following qualifications, or equivalents, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this job:Education and Formal Training:Bachelor's degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or Medical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology from an accredited institution with appropriate clinical training in the testing of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent and adult patientsMLS(ASCP) requiredWork Experience:NoneKnowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:Appropriate clinical training in the testing of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, and adult patientsPossess skills for accepting responsibility, making decisions, and working as a team.Ability to operate equipment at sitting or standing levels.Flexibility and adaptability to work additional hours or shifts and under stress.Effective communications skills to include listening, writing, talking, and reading.
