Medical Director

The general duty of the Medical Director is to provide oversight for the Community-Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) and comprehensive professional outpatient primary medical services to enrolled Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) patients, delivered in accordance with the VA Primary Care Program. The Medical Director collaborates with the clinic manager to supervise the CBOC’s day‑to‑day delivery of care and ensures continuous effective operations, including participation in the Clinical Quality Assurance Program.

Essential Functions

  • Provide vision and direction for clinical services, including new or improved program implementation.
  • Collaborate with the Clinic Manager to provide leadership to CBOC clinicians.
  • Assist the STGi Program Manager in implementing Quality Performance Improvement Team strategic initiatives.
  • Sign a collaborative practice agreement with clinic APRN and/or PA.
  • Provide primary and preventive medical care that meets patients’ physical, mental, and emotional needs.
  • Coordinate and participate in the recruitment and orientation of clinical staff physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners.
  • Evaluate adherence to policies, procedures, and regulations to ensure compliance and patient safety.
  • Design and participate in quality improvement, care management, risk management, peer review, utilization review, clinical outcomes, and health enhancement activities.
  • Maintain consistency in evidence‑based practice standards across the CBOC.
  • Lead provider huddles to assure situational awareness of clinic operational limits and daily work planning.
  • Act as director for the CLIA waived laboratory testing.
  • Expand clinical services by implementing non‑traditional encounters.
  • Analyze data to meet VA clinical performance standards.
  • Participate on the STGi Performance Excellence Team.
  • Enforce universal precautions and infection control practices.
  • Administer medications per facility protocols.
  • Keep the VISTA clinic reminder tracking system updated for each enrolled patient.
  • Comply with STGi policies and VA contract regulations.

Required Skills

  • Hold an active, full, and unrestricted medical license in the state where the physician practices; a state‑specific license for the CBOC location is required.
  • Board‑certified by the ABMS in Internal Medicine or Family Practice, or by the BOS ABMS in Internal Medicine and/or Family Practice.
  • Possess exceptional diplomatic communication skills and experience handling difficult customer situations.
  • Be detail‑oriented and capable of multitasking.

Required Experience

  • Formal management and leadership courses or certifications are highly desired.
  • Demonstrate education, training, and experience in Internal Medicine or Family Practice.

Required Education

  • Possess a Doctorate Degree in Medicine from an accredited college approved by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education and Hospitals of the American Medical Association, a Doctorate degree in Osteopathy from a college accredited by the American Osteopathic Association, or completion of the US Medical Licensing Examination.

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements

  • Moderate physical activity: handling of average‑weight objects up to 25 pounds or standing/walking for more than four (4) hours per day.
  • Work performed in a typical interior office environment.
  • Ability to respond to medical emergencies within the clinic, including rapid walking or jogging as needed.
