Senior Medical Director, Clinical Development, Oncology (Remote)

Role Overview


An experienced clinical leader is sought to head early-stage oncology development efforts. This senior role will guide the strategy and delivery of clinical programmes from first-in-human studies through early proof-of-concept phases.


You will oversee a portfolio of emerging therapies, ensuring that scientific insights, biomarker strategies, and clinical execution are aligned to accelerate development. This position plays a critical role in shaping the early pipeline and influencing key investment and progression decisions.


Key Responsibilities


Strategic Leadership

  • Define and lead the clinical development approach for early oncology programmes across multiple indications and treatment modalities
  • Design early-phase trials, including first-in-human, dose escalation, and expansion studies
  • Provide senior clinical input on portfolio prioritisation, including go/no-go decisions
  • Integrate translational science and biomarker strategies to optimise patient selection and demonstrate early efficacy signals


Clinical Oversight

  • Provide medical leadership for ongoing early-phase studies, ensuring high standards of safety and scientific integrity
  • Contribute to clinical protocols, regulatory submissions, and study documentation
  • Analyse and interpret clinical and translational data to guide dose selection and programme advancement
  • Ensure compliance with global regulatory requirements and best practices


Collaboration & External Engagement

  • Work closely with research, translational science, regulatory, and operational teams to advance programmes efficiently
  • Support interactions with regulatory authorities and external stakeholders
  • Engage with key opinion leaders, academic institutions, and advisory groups
  • Contribute to partnerships and collaborative development initiatives


Team Leadership

  • Lead and develop a team of clinical professionals across early oncology programmes
  • Build capabilities in early-stage development strategy and execution
  • Promote a culture of accountability, innovation, and collaboration


Candidate Profile

Essential Requirements:

  • Medical degree (MD required; MD/PhD advantageous)
  • Specialist training in oncology or haematology
  • Significant experience (10+ years) in oncology drug development within the pharmaceutical or biotech industry
  • Demonstrated leadership in early clinical development (Phase 1–2), including first-in-human trials
  • Experience working with regulatory authorities on early-stage programmes
  • Strong understanding of tumour biology, translational medicine, and clinical trial design


Key Skills:

  • Ability to lead multiple complex programmes simultaneously
  • Strong analytical capabilities, including interpretation of clinical and biomarker data
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills at senior levels
  • Proven experience building and managing high-performing teams


Compensation & Benefits

  • Base salary range: approximately $348,000 – $522,000 annually (U.S.-based roles)
  • Additional compensation may include performance bonuses and long-term equity incentives
