Job Summary

Gives medical/psychiatric direction to the Center; works with key staff and the quality assurance committee to help assure appropriate staff supervision in developing and delivering treatment plans; supervises the psychiatric resident when applicable; serves on after-hours call schedule; advises the director on programmatic staffing and policy matters to help assure the Center's certification and quality medical/psychiatric care. Functions as a psychiatrist for an assigned caseload of consumers with mental health disorders and/or chemical dependency disorders; in outpatient and emergency services. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, providing sound medical care, supporting, developing and/or applying the treatment/service plan and facilitating compliance. Reports to Executive Director of Hinds Behavioral Health Services.

Essential Functions

  • Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards of Hinds Behavioral Health Services (HBHS)
  • Assesses consumer needs for mental health services in a timely fashion; completes an initial psychiatric evaluation
  • Conducts medication evaluations as necessary to monitor consumer care and stability
  • Interviews consumers and significant others to identify extent and effects of disorder(s). Assists in the developing and implementing specific treatment/service plan based on study of consumer's problems
  • Confers with representatives of other programs to resolve problems and to develop and maintain public understanding and sound working relationships
  • Completes necessary documentation of services in a timely manner as prescribed by the policies and procedures of the facility
  • Maintain confidentiality of consumer data
  • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, inservice meetings, attends consumer care staffing, conferences, and other related workshops
  • Manages the overall medical operation of the program
  • Assists in the implementation of education and training experience for psychiatric residents and other designated students, when applicable
  • Acts as resource person to consumers and staff for resolution of problems related to consumer care
  • Serves as the formal medical officer liaison among medical staff, staff and administration
  • Participates in medical staff committee meetings as required. Attends and serves on professional or civic service organizations as a Center representative
  • Supports and interprets HBHS's mission, philosophy and objective
  • Performs other duties as assigned or requested

Qualifications

Must be licensed in the State of Mississippi as a practicing physician. Previous experience in a chemical dependency treatment or mental health setting preferred. Board certification is also preferred. Prefer experience in psychiatric consumer care throughout the life cycle. Employee must demonstrate ability to recognize consumers' individual needs based on medical conditions, age (infants, pediatrics, adolescents, young adults, middle-aged and geriatric) limitations and planned procedures. May be exposed to infectious and contagious diseases, with occasional exposure to unpleasant consumer elements. Good communication skills are necessary. This position has been determined to have low risk of occupational exposure to blood-borne pathogens. Subject to varying and unpredictable situations; handles emergency or crisis situations.
