Medical Director

Job Summary

The Medical Director will oversee the Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) and provide comprehensive primary medical services to patients enrolled in the Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC). The role includes supervising all providers, ensuring compliance with VA Primary Care Program standards, and collaborating with the Clinic Manager on day‑to‑day operations.

Essential Functions

• Provide vision and direction of clinical services including new or improved program implementation.
• Deliver primary and preventive medical care to meet patients’ physical, mental, and emotional needs.
• Coordinate recruitment, orientation, and supervision of clinical staff such as physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners.
• Collaborate with the Clinic Manager to provide leadership to CBOC clinicians.
• Assist the STGi Program Manager in implementing Quality Performance Improvement Team (QPIT) strategic initiatives.
• Evaluate adherence to policies, procedures, and regulations to ensure compliance and patient safety.
• Design and participate in quality improvement, care management, risk management, peer review, utilization review, clinical outcomes, and health enhancement activities.
• Ensure consistency in evidence‑based practice standards across the CBOC.
• Implement and attend provider huddles to assure situational awareness of clinic operational limitations and daily work planning.
• Act as director for the CLIA‑waived laboratory testing.
• Expand clinical services by implementing and facilitating non‑traditional encounters.
• Analyze data to meet VA clinical performance standards.
• Participate on the STGi Performance Excellence Team (PET).
• Sign a collaborative practice agreement with clinic APRN and/or PA.
• Evaluate and maintain universal precautions and infection control practices.
• Administer medications per facility protocols.
• Maintain the VISTA clinic reminder tracking system and notifications for each enrolled patient.
• Comply with STGi policies and VA contract regulations.

Required Skills and Experience

• Active, full, and unrestricted medical license in New York with at least five (5) years of primary care experience (board‑certified or eligible).
• Formal management and leadership training or certifications desirable.
• Experience in Internal Medicine or Family Practice.
• Board certification by the ABMS in Internal Medicine or Family Practice, or board eligibility.
• Current and unrestricted DEA registration.
• Current CPR/BLS certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) or Military Training Network (MTN).
• Knowledge of professional medical principles, procedures, and techniques appropriate to VA standards of practice.
• Knowledge of pharmacological agents used in patient treatment, including desired effects, side effects, complications, and patient usage considerations.
• Exceptional diplomatic communication skills and experience handling difficult customer situations.
• Attention to detail and ability to multitask.
• Experience with safe and reasonable opioid medication practices for chronic pain.
• Knowledge of customer service techniques tailored to age‑specific populations.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills in English and proper telephone etiquette.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and electronic medical records systems.

Required Education

• Doctorate of Medicine from an accredited institution approved by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education and the American Medical Association, or a Doctorate of Osteopathy from an accredited college approved by the American Osteopathic Association, or permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).
• Completed residency training in an accredited core specialty program leading to eligibility for board certification. Acceptable residencies are those accredited by the ACGME or AOA. Non‑US residencies must be followed by a minimum of five years verified practice in the United States.

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements

• Moderate physical activity, handling average‑weight objects up to 25 pounds and standing/walking for more than four (4) hours per day.
• Work performed in a typical interior/office environment.
• Requirement to respond to any medical emergency within the clinic, potentially requiring a fast walk or jog to provide assistance.
