Mechanic Position

Rusk County Highway Department is currently hiring for a mechanic. The mechanic position at the Rusk County Highway Department is responsible for various tasks involved with the repair of all types of highway maintenance and construction equipment including diesel and gasoline engines, manual and automatic transmissions, differentials, air brakes, tire mounting and changing, electrical trouble shooting, grease and lube and tune ups. The mechanic must be able to cut and weld with either gas or electric welders. The person who holds this position must furnish their own hand tools including complete socket and wrench sets to 1¼ inches, hammers, punches, pliers, etc.

Examples of Duties

Administrative Responsibility: Administrative responsibility is generally limited to providing occasional functional advice and guidance to a limited group.

Public/Customer Relations: The position involves minimal contact with the public or with others outside of their assigned work group. Interactions are generally limited to routine departmental issues, and the focus is mainly on tasks.

Government Relations: Will be minimally involved with government relations. Must apply understanding of rules, regulations, and guidelines in performance of job duties.

Safety of Others: Responsible for personal safety at work and common sense application of safety standards.

Complexity of Duties and Impact of Decisions: Duties are of a somewhat diversified nature involving a variety of applications where the employee is responsible for choice of action within prescribed limits or precedents. Position must work toward assigned objectives. Position holder must act independently and use good judgment to plan work, set priorities, assemble information, analyze facts or conditions regarding individual problems and situations, and to determine what action to take within limits of standard organization practice. Must seek advice on nonstandard situations. All work will be reviewed for application of sound judgement.

Typical Qualifications
  • At least 2 years' experience in heavy truck and heavy equipment mechanics.
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Vocational training in heavy truck driving, heavy equipment operations and mechanics; or 2-3 years of experience
  • Valid Wisconsin Commercial Driver's License, Class A with tanker endorsements.
  • Ability to follow standard practices and procedures.
  • Ability to read and understand written instructions.
  • Ability to work the allocated hours of the position which includes overtime when needed.
  • This job entails significant physical demands typically found in heavy industry or construction work, and with significant exposure to workplace hazards. Very frequent lifting, moving, bending, twisting, etc.
  • This position will require the use of specialized clothing or use of common personal protective equipment. Environmental conditions will frequently impact physical comfort.
