About the Role
The Managing Director, Practice Leader for Southern California is a senior executive role responsible for building, leading, and growing regional practice from the ground up. This is a true player-coach position that blends business development, client relationship ownership, consultant team leadership, and operational accountability. The ideal candidate has deep roots in the SoCal business community, a proven track record of driving revenue growth, and the leadership presence to attract and retain top financial talent.
Responsibilities
- Business Development & Revenue Growth
- Build and manage a pipeline of new client opportunities through networking, referral relationships, and direct outreach
- Develop and maintain strategic referral partnerships with CPA firms, law firms, private equity groups, investment banks, and lenders
- Lead proposals, pricing conversations, scope definitions, and contract negotiations
- Represent the firm at regional industry events, associations, and speaking engagements across SoCal
- Achieve and consistently exceed regional revenue and utilization targets
- Identify opportunities to expand existing client relationships
Practice Leadership & Operations
- Oversee day-to-day operations of the Southern California practice
- Recruit, onboard, develop, and retain a high-performing team of CFO, Controller, and Accounting consultants
- Manage consultant deployment, utilization, and performance to meet both client and firm objectives
- Build a regional culture of excellence, accountability, urgency, and continuous improvement
- Partner with national leadership on strategic initiatives, standardization, and best practices
Client Service Delivery
- Serve as executive sponsor and primary escalation point for key client relationships
- Ensure exceptional delivery quality across all active client engagements
- Step into select engagements to provide senior-level CFO and financial advisory support as needed
- Monitor client satisfaction and drive long-term retention and account expansion
Qualifications
Required
- 10+ years of progressive experience in finance, accounting, CFO services, or financial advisory
- Demonstrated success in business development, pipeline building, and closing new client engagements
- Proven experience leading and managing teams of senior-level professionals
- Established network and credibility within the Southern California business community
- Executive presence with strong communication, presentation, and relationship-building skills
- High degree of urgency, entrepreneurial mindset, and personal accountability
Preferred
- Prior experience as a CFO, VP of Finance, or senior financial executive
- CPA, MBA, or equivalent professional credential
- Familiarity with the fractional or outsourced professional services model
- Experience working with private equity-backed, owner-operated, or middle-market companies
- Background in a regional or national CPA or advisory firm at the Director or Managing Director level
Pay range and compensation package
$250,000 - $300,000 + performance bonus + equity participation
