Alpha Public Schools is a free, TK-12 public charter school system founded by families in East San José to provide stronger academics and support for their children. We are composed of four schools that educate approximately 1,900 scholars, with a mission to prepare the next generation of leaders in East San José.
Managing Director of Operations
The Managing Director of Operations (MDO) leads organizational processes across Alpha Public Schools, ensuring efficient, effective, and scalable systems in key areas including enrollment & attendance, facilities management, compliance systems, and school technology. The MDO reports to the Chief Financial Officer and works closely with executive and school leadership teams to support the school’s academic and operational goals.
Strategic Leadership and Operations Management
- Partner with the CFO and leadership team to drive the school’s operational strategy and ensure alignment with the school’s mission and vision.
- Directly manage key operational functions and roles, including Director of School Operations, IT Manager, Network Operations Data Manager, and Network Systems Manager.
- Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure efficient operation and regulatory compliance.
- Oversee day‑to‑day operations, including facilities management, attendance, technology infrastructure, student data & learning platforms, and food services.

Operations Strategy and Improvement
- Lead process improvement initiatives to streamline workflows and improve service delivery.
- Collaborate with department heads to identify bottlenecks and develop solutions.
- Develop and implement operational metrics to track performance and ensure accountability.
- Drive innovation and data‑based continuous improvement.
Compliance and Regulatory Oversight
- Engage with legal counsel and act as key liaison to mitigate risk.
- Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations related to school operations.
- Manage reporting to authorizers, regulatory bodies, and accreditation agencies.
- Oversee risk management and ensure proper insurance coverage.
- Regularly review operational policies to maintain evolving legal and regulatory compliance.
Campus Support
- Supvision of lunch, recess, arrival, and dismissal to ensure student safety.
- Provide additional resources and suggestions to support services as needed.
- Create a healthy and thriving school environment for students, staff, and families.
- Provide translation support when possible to support community collaboration.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Minimum 10 years of operations experience, including at least 5 years in a formal leadership role.
- Demonstrated experience leading multiple organizational functions simultaneously at an organizational scale of similar complexity.
- Experience leading school operations in one or more of: Attendance, National School Lunch Programs, Facilities, Finance, Data.
- Charter or District school, nonprofit, or public sector experience required; California charter or LEA experience strongly preferred.
- Deep understanding of school or nonprofit operations, including policy creation, system building, and accountability practices.
- Demonstrated ability to lead, develop, and hold accountable a diverse team of leaders across multiple functional areas.
