Responsibilities
- Manage the Mechanical Engineering department.
- Oversee all aspects of product and process design, managing the work plans for all projects needing mechanical engineering support.
- Clearly and consistently communicate product line vision to the engineering organization, guiding engineering efforts to achieve this vision.
- Develop engineering processes, best practices and test programs that ensure all products meet the appropriate safety, reliability, and performance standards.
- Provide training to direct and indirect reports as required to enhance departmental performance, including regular coaching and counseling on all aspects of job responsibilities.
- Leverage past experience and strong communication skills to collaborate effectively with sales, operations, and service.
- Ensure engineering systems used are the best possible to guarantee product integrity, reliability and cost effectiveness.
- Assure all products meet compliance with applicable regulations and industry standards.
- Responsible for mechanical engineering projects, including obtaining customer specifications and designing mechanical components of machinery; works closely with Sales, applying mechanical engineering knowledge of machinery principles, materials, manufacturing methods, and processes to ensure designs are functional, practical, economic, and satisfy customer operating requirements.
- Design machined and fabricated parts (including manufacturing methods) such as shafts, bearings & housings, valves, drive components, mounting plates & precision spacers, structural frame weldments, sheet metal bins, channels, covers, and ducts.
- Prepare proper bills of material based on design and order necessary control units for production.
- Analyze and prioritize projects based on the scope of established internal operations schedule.
- Interface with Manufacturing to ensure machinery designs are properly fabricated, parts machined, and assembled; may include revising mechanical design specifications/drawings. Interface with Production to conduct machinery mechanical testing, and coordinate with other departments such as sales/marketing, parts, purchasing, etc., to ensure customer on-time delivery. Direct and address inquiries and problems to other departments.
- Act as a technical resource for customers and the Service Department’s technicians to address and resolve inquiries and problems, especially during machine installation and start‑up at customer plants.
- Oversee the Mechanical Engineers at Axon.
- Assist in solving problems and design challenges.
- Manage workload and projects assigned to the mechanical engineering team.
- Facilitate teamwork and collaboration with other departments within Axon.
- Support the Director of Engineering with delegated tasks.
- Provide customer‑facing assistance for complaints and innovation.
- Provide input on performance reviews.
- Manage PTO & timecards of the team to meet production needs.
- Other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
- 7+ years’ experience in design and/or application engineering.
- Preferred Bachelor of Science degree in engineering (mechanical/electrical) or equivalent experience.
- Knowledge and experience in packaging machinery preferred.
- Proficiency with MS Office and knowledge of MRP/ERP systems; SAP preferred.
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
- Ability to demonstrate inventiveness and forward thinking.
- Experience with departmental management, strategic planning, and goal setting.
- Project management experience.
- Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize.
- Experience in product development from initial concept to launch.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to manage numerous projects simultaneously.
- Light/moderate travel based on business needs.
- Results‑oriented, self‑motivated, with a demonstrated ability to lead, coach, and inspire others toward the same behaviors.
- Analytical thinker with a desire for root‑cause problem solving.
- Works effectively and collaboratively and respectfully in a team environment, comfortable in cross‑functional roles.
