Job Summary

Mammography Technologists are responsible for the administration of ionizing radiation and multi-frequency sound waves for diagnostic, therapeutic or research purposes. A mammographer performs breast imaging procedures and acquires and analyzes data, including mammographic and sonographic images needed for diagnosis, at the request of and for interpretation by a licensed practitioner. Mammography Technologists independently perform or assist the licensed practitioner in the completion of mammographic and sonographic breast imaging procedures. They prepare, administer, and document activities related to medications and radiation exposure in accordance with federal and state laws, regulations, or lawful institutional policy.

Job Duties

  • Ensures correct order is obtained, patient is properly identified and prepared for exam, and clinical history is corroborated and documented while respecting confidentiality.
  • Utilizes appropriate imaging protocol and optimizes technical factors while maximizing patient safety, optimizing patient care, and applying principles of ALARA.
  • Prepares and/or administers medications through new or existing vascular access sites as prescribed by a licensed practitioner.
  • Evaluates images for proper positioning and acceptable technical quality and verifies archival storage and transfer of data, post‑processing of data if applicable.
  • Educates and monitors students and other health care providers.
  • Images pathologic breast specimens as prescribed by a licensed practitioner.
  • Performs breast ultrasound procedures as prescribed by a licensed practitioner.
  • Performs mammographic procedures per facility policy or as prescribed by a licensed practitioner.
  • Performs or assists with clinical breast examination.

Position Details

  • Certification by the American Registry of Radiology Technologist (ARRT) required upon hire.
  • New graduates must obtain ARRT‑R registry prior to first day of employment.
  • Specialty: Certification by the ARRT in Mammography must be obtained within 12 months of hire.

Education

Graduate from Specialty Training Program‑Radiologic Technology (Required), Bachelor's Degree‑Related Field of Study (Preferred).

Experience

Minimum of 1 year‑related work experience (Preferred).

Certifications and Licenses

Basic Life Support Certification – Radiography (R) – American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
