Position Purpose

Under the direction of the radiologist, performs appropriate diagnostic exams and studies to ensure safe, high-quality patient care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Under the direction of the Radiologist and the Arizona Department of Health Services (AZDHS), administers ionizing radiation for diagnosis, including positioning the x‑ray beam, anatomically positioning the patient, selecting exposure factors, and initiating exposure.
  • Uses professional judgment to adapt imaging procedures to ensure quality diagnostic outcomes.
  • After reviewing all pertinent data and assessing the patient’s abilities and condition, selects the most appropriate patient care plan.
  • Selects appropriate shielding devices and immobilization devices.
  • Assesses factors that may contraindicate the procedure, such as medications or insufficient patient preparation.
  • Reconfirms patient identification using two unique identifiers (Name and DOB) and verifies procedure requested. Verifies female patient pregnancy status when appropriate.
  • Able to recognize significant clinical information and historical facts from the patient and from the medical record that may impact the examination.
  • Monitors patient and equipment during procedures, accurately documents exam times (start and stop), patient reactions or problems, and reports concerns or issues immediately to supervisor.
  • Documents patient and exam occurrences in the appropriate imaging software database, including exam start and completion times.
  • Provides evidence‑based care to prevent the development of healthcare‑acquired conditions and hospital readmissions.
  • Practices standard precautions during patient contact and while handling contaminated materials.
  • Complies with CDC hand hygiene guidelines and works to reduce hospital‑acquired infections and other conditions.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an American Registry of Radiological Technologists (ARRT) Program.
  • Required certification: BLS through the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
  • Current registration and licensure by the ARRT.
  • Current registration and licensure in Mammography by the Arizona Department of Health Services (AZDHS(M)).
  • Registration and licensure in Mammography through ARRT required or within 6 months post‑educational cross training within the organization.

Preferences

  • Education preferred from an institution approved by ARRT, Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JCERT), or the American College of Radiology (ACR).
  • Minimum of one year of experience as a mammography technologist performing digital mammography.

Special Position Requirements

  • Exposure Categories: Category II – Expected duties have possible, but not routine, potential for exposure to blood, body fluids or tissues.

Work Requirements

  • Able to manage technical business equipment, e.g., phone, fax, computer.
  • Able to assist with the movement or manipulation of a patient and equipment weighing up to and over 300 lbs.
  • Able to care for patients with infectious diseases.
  • Able to sit, stand, walk, and bend for the duration of the scheduled shift.
  • Able to demonstrate concentration and visual and auditory acuity to watch monitors and follow instructions during exams.
