Job Title: Industrial Controls and Automation Technician Job Description

This role focuses on troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining a wide range of production and packaging machinery and utility equipment, with a strong emphasis on industrial electrical and automation control systems. You will work with advanced motor control, power distribution, and programmable control technologies to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient plant operations, while continuously improving existing control systems and integrating new technologies.

Responsibilities

  • n

    Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain a wide range of production and packaging machines and utility equipment to minimize downtime and ensure reliable operation.

  • n

    Diagnose and resolve issues in motor control systems, including A/C and D/C circuits, high and low voltage systems, and power distribution equipment.

  • n

    Work with relay logic, PLC and PAC systems, and Input/Output modules to identify faults, implement corrective actions, and restore normal operation.

  • n

    Configure, troubleshoot, and maintain motion control systems, vision systems, variable frequency drives (VFDs), human-machine interfaces (HMIs), and condition monitoring sensors.

    Maintain and calibrate process instrumentation to ensure accurate measurement and control of process variables such as temperature, pressure, flow, and level.

  • n

    Support and maintain industrial networks and communication systems, including Ethernet/IP, DeviceNet, ControlNet, and related industrial communication protocols.

    Update, modify, and continuously improve existing control systems for production processes and equipment by integrating value-added features and new technologies.

    Program, modify, and troubleshoot PLCs and related automation hardware and software, including SLCs, MicroLogix, CompactLogix, and RSLogix 5, RSLogix 500, and RSLogix 5000.

    Configure and support PanelView and other HMI interfaces to improve operator usability and system diagnostics.

    Document changes to control systems, programs, and configurations to maintain accurate records and support future troubleshooting and improvements.

    Collaborate with production, maintenance, and engineering teams to identify root causes of equipment issues and implement long-term corrective actions.

    Follow and promote safe work practices when working on electrical, electronic, and mechanical equipment, ensuring compliance with relevant standards and procedures.

    Proven experience troubleshooting and maintaining production and packaging machines and utility equipment.

    Strong electrical troubleshooting skills, including experience with high voltage and low voltage systems and A/C and D/C circuits.

    Hands-on experience with motor controls, power distribution systems, and relay logic.

    Practical experience with PLC and PAC systems, including configuration, programming, and troubleshooting.

    Proficiency in troubleshooting PLC systems and automation faults in a production environment.

    Working knowledge of Input/Output modules, motion controls, vision systems, variable frequency drives (VFDs), and HMIs.

    Experience with condition monitoring sensors and process instrumentation, including calibration.

Work Environment

The role is based in an industrial production facility that uses a wide range of production and packaging equipment, utility systems, and advanced automation technologies. You will work hands-on with electrical panels, motor control centers, PLC and PAC systems, industrial networks, and HMI interfaces. The environment is fast-paced and equipment-intensive, requiring careful attention to safety and adherence to established procedures. Work may involve time on the production floor, around machinery, and in control rooms, with typical industrial dress and appropriate personal protective equipment as required.
