Machinist

Machinist PositionThis unique role works in a prototype machine shop environment and understands how to set up small or one-off custom part runs in an efficient manner. The Machinist will help us set up and operate a new 3 to 5 axis VMC and must have some experience with Mastercam, SolidCAM or similar. The machinist will also need some experience with Southwestern's TRAK mill and lathes.

The position applies GD&T, reads shop prints, interacts and communicates with engineers and scientists, and operates machinery and equipment in a safe manner.ResponsibilitiesWhat You'll DoOperate machinery and equipment in a safe mannerPerform housekeeping tasks as necessary to maintain a clean and safe work areaNotify supervisory personnel if a nonconforming condition is disclosedPerform tool proofing of first run jobs and give feedback to programming to ensure run efficiency and accuracySet controls of feed, speed, and depth of cut without supervisionUnderstand and apply optimal workholding techniquesWork with other operators as required to ensure optimum setupAnalyze and solve manufacturing problems with a high level of skillFollow safety guidelines and procedures established by the companyCalculate dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and instruments such as micrometers and/or calipersIdentify nonconforming parts using precision measuring instrumentsSet tooling and apply offsetsUsing tooling and material data, calculate surface footage to machine componentsQualificationsMinimum RequirementsHigh School Diploma or GED requiredMust have a training school background plus 3 to 5 years in a prototype machine shop using manual machines, or 5 to 10 years in a prototype machine shopExperience setting up and operating a 3- to 5-axis VMCExperience with Mastercam, SolidCAM, or similar CAM softwareExperience with Southwestern's TRAK mill and lathesRequires working knowledge of controls and instrumentation, conceptual skills, functional and technical skills, attention to detail, good verbal communication skills, and ability to use good judgmentMust have a strong understanding of GD&T and be able to read shop printsMust be able to interact and communicate with engineers and scientistsPhysical RequirementsFrequent use of computers with repetitive keyboard and mouse activity and manual dexterityAbility to operate hand and power tools for long periodsAbility to regularly lift 20 pounds and occasionally lift up to 50 poundsHourly Rate: $38/hr - $43/hrAbout NusanoNusano is a privately held physics company working to stabilize supply chains, advance American national security, and enable once-in-a-generation innovations in fields ranging from healthcare to nuclear energy.
