MACHINIST

MachinistThis position is open to the public and all current city employees covered under the City's Collective Bargaining Agreement with Machinists – Local 126 (Bargaining Unit 36). Only employees in City job titles in this bargaining unit are eligible to bid. Applications for this position will be accepted until 11:59pm CDT on 10/5/2026.Under supervision, performs journey-level machinist work in the manufacturing, repair, and rebuilding of precision metal parts for the maintenance of mechanical equipment and machinery, and performs related duties as required.Essential duties include:Reviews blueprints, specifications, or models of parts to be made and determines work procedures, metal stock, and machine tools to use to fabricate partsInspects and dismantles mechanical equipment and machinery to identify malfunctions, determine needed repairs or adjustments, and repairs equipment as neededFabricates metal parts by setting up and operating conventional or computer-controlled machine tools (e.g., lathes, milling machines, grinders, drill presses)Plans and lays out jobs, making calculations to establish dimensions, locating and marking surfaces and angles to be machined, setting machine controls, and making necessary cuts to perform machining operationsPerforms precision handwork to finish, fit, and assemble machined parts using bench mounted and hand held power tools (e.g., files, die grinders, buffers, scrapers, and drill presses)Uses precision measuring instruments (e.g., vernier calipers, micrometers, surface gauges, dial indicators) to maintain dimensional accuracy and specified tolerances during machining operations and equipment repairsDetermines and monitors the feed and speed of the machine during machining operationsChecks finished metal products to ensure they meet specificationsInstalls and tests new and repaired parts, ensuring proper fit and operationPrepares work activity reportsLoads, transports, and unloads equipment and supplies as requiredCleans work sites after repairsCleans, repairs, and lubricates machinery, tools, and equipmentWelds or brazes broken parts with electric or gas equipment, as requiredCuts steel with acetylene torch, as requiredDisassembles machines and equipment using hand and/or power tools to examine parts for defects or to replace defective partsLocation: 3124 S.

Sacramento, Chicago, IL 60623 Days: Monday - Friday Hours: 7:30AM – 3:30PMMinimum qualifications include:Six (6) years of journey-level work experience as a MachinistSuccessful completion of a US Department of Labor registered Machinist apprenticeship training program and journeyman statusSuccessful completion of an industry or company sponsored apprenticeship training program as a Machinist, plus two (2) years of journey-level experience as a MachinistThis position does not require an interview, this position requires candidates to pass a written job knowledge exam. Test results will be sent out by the Department of Human Resources after test results have been analyzed and compiled. Bid candidates who pass the test will be hired in seniority order.
