Machine Program Shop AssistantUnder the general supervision of an assigned supervisor, provides basic, non-technical assistance to the machine program workshop, classrooms, and laboratories at the Simi Institute for Careers & Education. Distinguishing Characteristics A Machine Program Shop Assistant provides basic, routine, and non-technical support to the machine program under close guidance.Essential Duties & ResponsibilitiesAssists with minor construction of tooling and machining equipment under the guidance of a machine instructor or instructional assistant.Performs basic repairs to tools and equipment and refers more complex repairs to a machine instructor or instructional assistant.Sets up, tests, and takes down equipment, supplies, and work stations used in classes and laboratories per the instruction of a machine instructor or instructional assistant.Directs students to resources (e.g. training materials, machine instructor/instructional assistant) for instructional support.Cleans equipment and work areas; handles and disposes of harmful or hazardous materials according to specific instructions relating to their disposal.Stocks and organizes the stockroom; inventories equipment, materials, and supplies (e.g.
tools, parts, metal items, consumable supplies) and written materials and manuals required for student instructional needs; checks out and monitors tools, equipment, supplies, and materials used by students.Performs light cleaning (e.g. sweeping floors, picking up trash) and shop upkeep (e.g. metal recycling, replacing/cleaning oils and other fluids) to assist with maintaining the machine shop in a neat and functioning condition.Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.Minimum QualificationsEnrollment in the Simi Institute for Careers & Education machine program or equivalent recognized machine instructional program and successful completion of the machine classroom safety protocols test or equivalent machine safety examination OR Six months of experience working in an industry which provides familiarity with basic machining and shop safetySupplemental InformationSkills, Knowledge and Abilities Skills to:Safely operate assigned machine shop tools and equipmentKnowledge of:Machine laboratory and workshop procedures, organization, equipment, and toolsAppropriate safety precautions and procedures associated with machining and tooling workBasic inventory methodsAbility to:Assist in minor construction of tooling and machining equipment, work stations, and demonstrationsPerform basic minor repair of machine shop tools and equipmentPerform light manual laborLift, carry, push, and pull objects of medium to heavy weightCollaborate with others to carry out workCarry out verbal and written instructionsLearn and apply new information and skillsWorking Environment Work is performed in an indoor environment where safety considerations exist from physical labor and hazardous materials.
