- Hand tooling the hot mix : The Lute man is the last person to touch the fresh asphalt before the roller compacts it. Using a rake or "lute" tool, they spread, smooth, and tamp the material to the correct grade and thickness
- Repairing imperfections : They rake and lute the surface to fix bumps, voids, or uneven spots, ensuring a uniform finish
- Matching and finishing joints : They align and blend fresh asphalt with existing pavement or joints for a seamless look
- Preparing surfaces : Before paving, they may rake or broom the base to ensure proper adhesion
- Assisting with other tasks : Depending on the crew, they may help distribute asphalt, spray release agents, or assist with traffic control and barricades
