Grid-Side Converter Control Consultant with strong expertise in grid-forming (GFM) and grid-following (GFL) control strategies, MATLAB/Simulink-based model development, and real-time validation of converter controls for renewable-energy and power-electronics applications. This role focuses on the development, modelling, and validation of control algorithms for grid-connected converters, including weak-grid stability, synchronization, and grid-code-related performance.
Key Responsibilities
- 1. Grid-Side Converter Control Development
- Develop and refine grid-forming control strategies, including VSM-type control, droop control, and other voltage-forming algorithms.
- Design grid-following control loops, covering active/reactive power control, current regulation, and sequence-component-based controllers.
- Ensure converter stability and robustness under weak-grid conditions, grid disturbances, and low short-circuit-ratio operation.
- 2. Synchronization & PLL Development
- Develop and validate advanced PLL architectures (e.g., SOGI-PLL, CDSC-PLL, adaptive PLLs) for disturbed or weak grids.
- Evaluate synchronization performance across various grid conditions including dips, unbalance, harmonics, and dynamic frequency changes.
- 3. MATLAB/Simulink Modeling & Simulation
- Build and maintain detailed converter, network, and controller models in MATLAB/Simulink and related toolchains.
- Conduct small-signal stability analysis, impedance-based assessments, harmonic studies, and transient simulations.
- Use MIL/SIL/HIL workflows to ensure accuracy from model to implementation and support system-level optimization.
- 4. Real-Time Validation & Hardware-in-the-Loop Testing
- Validate control algorithms using real-time simulators such as Typhoon HIL, dSPACE, OPAL-RT, or RTDS.
- Reproduce grid-disturbance scenarios including islanding, fault ride-through, harmonic distortions, frequency deviations, and resonance issues.
- Verify robustness and compliance across a wide range of operating conditions.
- 5. Weak-Grid Engineering & Stability
- Analyze converter-grid interactions, resonance behavior, and control-loop sensitivity under weak-grid conditions.
- Develop mitigation strategies such as adaptive current control, virtual impedance, damping algorithms, and enhanced synchronization filters.
- Support design decisions related to filter tuning, grid-compliance behavior, and multi-converter interoperability.
- 6. System Integration & Cross-Functional Support
- Collaborate with electrical, software, and system-engineering teams on grid-converter interfaces.
- Support commissioning activities, troubleshooting, parameter tuning, and compliance-driven testing.
- Prepare high-quality documentation, simulation reports, stability assessments, and validation packages for internal and external stakeholders.
Required Skills & Experience
- Strong background in power electronics, grid-connected converters, and renewable-energy integration.
- Expertise in grid-forming and grid-following control concepts, including dq0-based current control and voltage-forming control structures.
- Proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink, model-based development, and converter-grid interaction modelling.
- Experience using HIL/CHIL platforms for real-time testing (e.g., dSPACE, RTDS, Typhoon HIL, OPAL-RT).
- Solid understanding of PLL systems, harmonic behavior, weak-grid dynamics, and grid-code-related control functions.
- Minimum 3 years of industry experience in converter control, power electronics, or grid-integration engineering.
Summary of Core Competencies
- Strong knowledge of grid-forming and grid-following converter control strategies.
- Expertise in MATLAB/Simulink modelling, analysis, and control-algorithm development.
- Experience with real-time testing
- Robust understanding of power electronics, control loops, and dynamic grid behavior.
- At least 3 years of relevant industry experience.
