How You’ll Help Transform Healthcare
- Provides practical nursing support in the delivery of quality care for patients in a physician practice or clinic setting as directed by the physician or mid‑level practitioner.
- Complies with all federal, state, local, Carilion Clinic, and departmental policies and standards as applicable.
- Demonstrates knowledge of growth and development to appropriately care for patients served.
- Provides nursing care for patients of all ages.
- Completes patient assessment, including height, weight, vital signs, chief complaint, current medications, etc.
- Prepares patient for provider evaluation – obtaining specimens, positioning for exams, listing medications, assisting during exams and diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
- Coordinates tele‑retinal and tele‑dermatology clinic set up.
- Administers medications and injections as directed by the provider.
- Maintains work area, exam, treatment, and x‑ray rooms and lab in a clean, safe manner; restocks supplies and instruments; sterilizes reusable equipment as needed.
- Documents and maintains patient information in the electronic medical record in a timely manner to include updates on treatment procedures, medication refills, test results, patient concerns, etc.
- Contributes to Carilion Clinic’s performance improvement activities.
- Provides patient teaching as indicated and directed by the provider, including lab results, diet instructions, medication instructions, appropriate follow‑up, and reinforcing provider instructions as needed.
- Assists with referral authorizations for specialists and pre‑authorizations for testing and ancillary services.
- Assists with lab procedures – collecting urine specimens, collecting and preparing blood samples for reference lab, labeling all specimens with accurate patient ID.
- Observes all safety precautions and standards; assures proper disposal of specimens and contaminated waste.
- LAB (if applicable): Performs lab procedures as directed by the provider (phlebotomy, peripheral sticks, collecting and preparing urine specimens, throat smears); conducts lab testing onsite after appropriate training, including waived and moderate complexity studies; prepares equipment to begin testing; runs daily quality control tests as directed by lead clinical/lab staff; adheres to quality control measures; performs proficiency testing and control testing and calibration on all equipment; maintains Q/A Plan.
- RADIOLOGY (if applicable): Performs x‑ray procedures as directed by the provider; takes measures to prevent excessive exposure to patient and self; completes all documentation and labeling of x‑rays.
- Performs any other tasks relating to the operation of the practice that may be assigned or requested for which training has been provided.
What We Require
Education: Graduate of an accredited school of practical nursing required, or new graduate of an approved program eligible to sit for the Virginia licensure exam.
Experience: One (1) year experience in a physician office preferred.
Licensure/Certification: Current licensure as a Practical Nurse in the State of Virginia (LPN) required. Licensure as a Radiologic Technician Limited if performing radiology. Current AHA BLS‑HCP certification required.

Compensation Range
$21.61 - $30.25. Employee pay is based on a variety of factors, including qualifications, credentials, education, and prior work experience. The compensation range does not include benefits or pension plan.
