LPN Outpatient - Cardiology Clinic - Roanoke (Open)

Responsibilities

• Provides practical nursing support in the delivery of quality care for patients in a physician practice or clinic setting as directed by the physician or mid-level practitioner.
• Complies with all federal, state, local, Carilion Clinic, and departmental policies and standards.
• Demonstrates knowledge of growth and development to appropriately care for patients served.
• Provides nursing care for patients of all ages.
• Completes patient assessment to include height, weight, vital signs, chief complaint, current medications, etc.
• Prepares patients for provider evaluation, including obtaining specimens, positioning for exams, listing medications, assisting during exams and diagnostic/therapeutic procedures.
• Coordinates tele-retinal and tele-dermatology clinic setup.
• Administers medications and injections as directed by the provider.
• Maintains work area, exam, treatment and X‑ray rooms and lab in a clean, safe manner; restocks supplies and instruments; sterilizes reusable equipment as needed.
• Documents and maintains patient information in the electronic medical record in a timely manner, including updates of treatment procedures, medication refills, test results, patient concerns, etc.
• Contributes to Carilion Clinic’s performance improvement activities.
• Provides patient teaching as indicated and directed by the provider, including lab results, diet instructions, medication instructions, appropriate follow‑up, and reinforcing provider instructions.
• Assists with referral authorizations for specialists and pre‑authorizations for testing and ancillary services.
• Assists with lab procedures, including collecting urine specimens, collecting and preparing blood samples for reference lab, labeling all specimens with accurate patient ID.
• Observes safety precautions and standards; assures proper disposal of specimens and contaminated waste.
• When applicable, performs lab procedures as directed by the provider: phlebotomy, peripheral sticks, collecting and preparing urine specimens, throat smears; conducts lab testing onsite after appropriate training, including waived and moderate complexity studies.
• When applicable, performs x‑ray procedures as directed by the provider, taking measures to prevent excessive exposure to patient and self, and completing all documentation and labeling of x‑rays.
• Completes any other tasks relating to the operation of the practice that may be assigned or requested for which training has been provided.

Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited school of practical nursing required, or new graduate of an approved program eligible to sit for the Virginia licensure exam.
• One (1) year experience in a physician office preferred.
• Current licensure as a Practical Nurse in the State of Virginia (LPN) required.
• Current AHA BLS‑HCP certification required.
• Licensure as a Radiologic Technician Limited if performing radiology.
• Customer driven with a positive demeanor, good verbal and written communication skills, and a professional appearance and approach.
• Ability to problem‑solve and communicate with a wide variety of people in an effective manner.
• Proficient skills utilizing automated computer systems, including electronic medical records.
• Keyboarding skills required for automated computer systems, including electronic medical records.
