Job Description

Job Title: Long-Term Substitute Speech & Language Pathologist

Location: Jackson-Via Elementary School

Reports to: Principal

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Anticipated Dates: August 3, 2026 until Mid-September

Summary: A Speech & Language Pathologist is responsible for screening, identifying, assessing, and diagnosing students with articulation, fluency, voice, language, communication, swallowing, and related disabilities. The SLP also plans and implements treatments to minimize adverse impacts on student success and recommends placement and language skill development.

Essential Functions

  • Assess students’ communication skills to identify disorders, determine eligibility, and develop treatment recommendations.
  • Collaborate with parents, teachers, physicians, administrators, and other professionals to communicate information and resolve issues.
  • Coordinate meetings and processes for eligible students (e.g., testing, IEPs, parent conferences, pre-referral staffing, and eligibilities) to present results and develop IEPs.
  • Develop IEPs, treatment plans, and educational materials to minimize adverse impacts in accordance with state and federal regulations.
  • Instruct students in the use of appropriate communication technologies (e.g., hearing aids, augmentative communication, FM systems).
  • Interpret medical reports within scope to provide appropriate information or adjust intervention plans.
  • Maintain files and records to ensure availability of information for compliance.
  • Participate in meetings, workshops, and seminars to share and gather information.
  • Prepare written materials (activity logs, correspondence, memos, treatment plans, Medicaid billing information, reports).
  • Provide speech and language therapy to minimize the impact of disorders on success.
  • Research resources and methods to determine the appropriate approach for individual needs.
  • Respond to inquiries from parents, teachers, staff, and students for information or referrals.
  • Complete other assigned duties.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

Skills required include excellent oral and written communication, strong organization, meeting deadlines, applying policies and regulations, planning and managing activities, preparing accurate records, operating office equipment and software, understanding child growth and development, basic math, reading technical information, composing documents, facilitating group discussions, problem solving, scheduling, working with diverse individuals, interpreting guidelines, maintaining confidentiality, and flexibility. Knowledge of child development stages, standardized assessment tools, and available community resources is also required.

Education and / or Experience

Master’s Degree with a Virginia License endorsed in Speech/Language Pathology is required. Candidates must hold ASHA certification and be eligible for school-based Medicaid billing. Previous teaching or pathology experience is preferred.

Physical Conditions and Nature of Work

Work occurs in classrooms, gym, auditorium, and recreational areas. Requires frequent walking, standing, light lifting up to 40 pounds, and daily interaction with children. Regular contact with staff, parents, and medical professionals is expected, requiring tact and diplomacy.
