Long Term Substitute School Counselor

The Shelton Public School system has a vacancy for a Long Term Substitute School Counselor at Sunnyside School. Duties: Per attached job description. Certification: Valid CT Certification - Appropriate Endorsement School Counselor (068) Required. Salary: $323.56/Per Diem. Position Start Date: October 12, 2026 (Approximate). Days/Hours: Monday - Friday 8:45 a.m. - 4 p.m.

The School Counselor will work under the general supervision and be evaluated by Shelton Public Schools' administration or the School Counselor Curriculum Leader as assigned. The School Counselor will develop and deliver appropriate curricula including but not limited to the Connecticut State Department of Education school counselor competencies.

Responsibilities include providing individual and small group counseling in a variety of settings for students and parents including but not limited to academic and career planning and social and emotional development. The counselor will consult and collaborate with teachers, staff and parents in understanding and meeting the needs of students in the school setting. They will make referrals as appropriate for students and parents to outside agencies and specialists. The counselor will monitor and advise students and parents as to progress toward graduation/promotion which includes assessment and other student data. They will provide information/data to parents, school staff, administration and the community in order to assist students in academic, career and social development. The counselor will assist in the identification of at risk behaviors and make appropriate referrals to school personnel, outside agencies or specialists as appropriate. They will assist students in evaluating their aptitudes and abilities through the interpretation of individual standardized test scores and other pertinent data and work with students in evolving education and occupation plans in terms of such evaluation. The counselor will develop and evaluate data in order to plan for an appropriate course of study for each student. They will participate in the development of student success plans for each student. The counselor will work in conjunction with other school personnel regarding student drop-out prevention. They will supervise the preparation and processing of college and scholarship applications. The counselor will plan and coordinate programs such as career and college fairs, scholarships and other extensions of the school counseling curriculum. They will develop and maintain liaisons with post-secondary institutions, employers, community leaders and organizations for the purpose of building resources and expanding program opportunities for eligible students. The counselor will serve as a member of the school crisis team. They will demonstrate ethical behavior in accordance with Connecticut Code of Professional Responsibility for Teachers. The counselor will attend a variety of meetings and professional learning opportunities as offered by the School District for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform duties. They will attend after school and evening meetings/conferences in accordance with the Agreement between the Shelton Board of Education and the Shelton Education Association. The counselor will work collaboratively with School District personnel, parents and community stakeholders for the purpose of improving the overall quality of student learning outcomes and in support of School District goals and objectives. They will follow School District policies, procedures and curricula. The counselor will prepare records and reports with accuracy and timeliness. They will model acceptable written and oral expressions. The counselor will model good attendance and punctuality.

Requirements include Connecticut certification as appropriate. Demonstrated ability to analyze assessment and other student data as a means for making instructional decisions. Demonstrated responsibility for self-growth, professional improvement, ongoing self-reflection or self-evaluation. Demonstrated ability in the effective use of instructional technology. Ability to maintain effective working relationships. Superior organizational, oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated commitment to the department team concept and the overall success of the organization.

Terms of employment and salary are in accordance with the Agreement between the Shelton Education Association and the Shelton Board of Education.
