LocksmithFacilities Maintenance Operations (FMO) offers building & landscape maintenance, and custodial services to Harvard faculty and departments on a fee-for-service basis. All services are provided in strict accordance with customer-determined standards. As such, FMO operates as an in-house alternative to contractor services and therefore must manage itself under the same principles that guide any successful maintenance service business.The Locksmith is responsible for performing a full range of locksmith services, including installation, maintenance, repair, and modification of mechanical and electronic locking systems.
This role also involves the design and management of complex master key systems and ensuring compliance with safety and accessibility standards.Job-Specific Responsibilities:Install, repair, maintain, and troubleshoot mechanical and electronic locking systemsCylindrical and mortise locksetsEmergency exit devices and egress systemsDoor closers, operators, and related hardwareVault and safe locking mechanismsDesign, implement, and maintain master key systems, including high-security systemsCut and duplicate keys using manual and machine methodsMaintain accurate records and logs of key systems and hardwareRetrofit and upgrade existing locking and access control systemsCollaborate with other trades and facilities staff on projects and repairsEnsure all work complies with safety regulations, ADA requirements, and institutional standardsProvide responsive, professional customer servicePerforms other duties as required.Working Conditions:Emergency Status Designation: Critical Operations Personnel, requiring on-site support during emergencies as needed.Physical Requirements:Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and assist with heavier loads (300+ lbs)Frequent bending, climbing, reaching, and working in confined spacesComfortable working at heights (ladders, platforms)Extended periods of walking, standing, and manual laborQualifications:Basic Qualifications:Minimum of 5 years of locksmith experienceStrong mechanical, troubleshooting, and carpentry skillsWorking knowledge of electronic access control systemsExperience with installation and repair of mechanical and electromechanical hardwareValid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record (ongoing condition of employment)Additional Qualifications and Skills:Willingness to work in laboratory environments and around hazardous materialsAbility to wear required safety equipment and uniformsAvailability for overtime and emergency responseUnderstanding of master key systems and keying strategiesAbility to work independently and as part of a teamStrong communication and customer service skillsBasic proficiency with Windows-based applicationsExperience with Microsoft Office and email systemsFamiliarity with smartphones or handheld devices for work orders and communicationMust supply a complete set of hand toolsCertificates and Licenses:Valid driver's licenseLocation:Harvard Campus – Wide Support; Cambridge, MA (USA)Standard Hours/Schedule:40 hours per weekSunday: OFFMonday: 7:00 am - 3:30 pmTuesday: 7:00 am - 3:30 pmWednesday: 7:00 am - 3:30 pmThursday: 7:00 am - 3:30 pmFriday: 7:00 am - 3:30 pmSaturday: OFFCompensation Range/Rate (including Shift Differential if applicable):$50.82/hourVisa Sponsorship Information:Harvard University is unable to provide visa sponsorship for this positionPre-Employment Screening:IdentityEducationCriminalCertification/LicenseMotor Vehicle RecordDrug TestCORIEmploymentWork Format Details:This position has been determined by school or unit leaders that all duties and responsibilities must be performed at a Harvard or Harvard-designated location.
