Unit Information

  • Main PACU: 33 pre/post rooms, 10 Phase I PACU bays
  • East PACU: 33 pre/post rooms, 17 Phase I PACU bays
  • Main on 2nd floor; East on 1st floor (same building)
  • Average patients per day combined: 60‑80
  • Minimum Experience: 2 years Phase I/Phase II
  • Will consider first‑time travelers with extensive PACU experience

Patient Types / Common Diagnoses

  • Inpatient, outpatient, observation. Peds and adults.
  • General, plastics, urology, GI, bariatrics, GYN, minor vascular, neurosurgery (spine, craniectomy), Robotics cases, ophthalmology, ortho, cardiothoracic (thoracotomies/pericardial windows, no open hearts), ENT (sinus, PE tubes, T/As), endovascular, fistulas, bronchs, post‑cath, post‑IR/Neuro IR
  • Ventilated/ICU level patients typically go to ICU post‑OR; occasionally intubated patient or assist with intubation in PACU

Patient Ratios

  • Pre‑op: 1:3
  • Phase I: 1:2
  • Phase II: 1:3

Required Licensure & Certification

  • RN: BLS, ACLS, PALS; CAPA or CPAN certification required (will accept either)
  • CNA: BLS

Skills & Experience Needed

  • RN: Experience in PACU with the above patient types, read/interpret cardiac rhythms, manage cardiac gtts, provide discharge instructions (Phase I and Phase II recovery). Extensive experience with post‑cath, bronchs, IR patients highly preferred.
  • Hard stops: art lines, TR bands, chest tubes, CBI, EPIC
  • CNA: Experience with blood sugar checks, IV removals, clipping and scrubbing surgical sites, cleaning, restocking
  • Teamwork: It is everyone's responsibility to help everyone out. Nothing is “just a CNA or LPN” duty

Support Within Department

  • Charge RN, Management, CNA/LPN (float), Bedside and Nursing Station Tele, no Tele Tech, Hospitalist 24/7, RT 24/7, Anesthesiologists/CRNAs, Surgeons

Technology & Equipment

  • EMR: EPIC – required for RNs
  • IV Pump: Alaris
  • Medication dispensing: Pyxis

Floating & Orientation

  • Travelers will float regularly between Phase I and Phase II Recovery for Main 6 PACU and East PACU
  • Orientation: NEO
  • 2 8‑hour shifts in the department as orientation

Scheduling

  • Weekend rotation: None (not allowed to pick up call or weekends)
  • On call: None
  • Holiday expectations: None
  • RTO approval: No more than 4 days of RTO will be approved
  • Shift times: 12:00‑20:30, Monday‑Friday depending on requisition

  • Scrub color: Any solid color, professional, no logos/graffiti
  • Parking: Free parking lot
