Duis Center Lifeguard

The Lifeguard is responsible for the safety of all assigned recreational areas at the Duis Recreation Center pool. The Lifeguard is responsible for performing the essential functions as outlined in this job description. The Duis Center Lifeguard is a part-time employee who may work no more than twenty-nine (29) hours per week. Work is performed in an alert state and must be consistent at all times. Work pace varies depending on the task required. The position of Lifeguard may perform duties in the hard work level (lifting 100 lbs.) infrequently.

Qualifications

The candidate must be at least sixteen (16) years of age, possess a valid Starguard lifeguard certification, first aid and CPR certification. (Candidates must be lifeguard certified or attain certification within one month of hire.)

Immediate Supervisor

The Lifeguard is under the direction of the Duis Center Manager.

Essential Functions

a) Prevents accidents by managing guests, enforcing rules, scanning swimmers for distress and directing weak swimmers to remain in shallow water. b) Provides state-of-the-art rescue and emergency care. c) Consistently and courteously enforces all rules. Knows all pool rules and understands their purpose. d) Administers first aid when necessary. Use only first aid techniques that you have been trained in. Complete appropriate accident/injury report forms. e) Inspects all safety equipment and report broken and defective pieces to the Duis Center Manager. f) Refrains from any conversation or other diversion while on duty. g) Participates in preseason and monthly in-service training. h) Performs assigned cleaning duties. i) Adheres to established safety practices as outlined by the District's Safety Manual and/or as set forth by the District's Safety Committee. j) Performs all other duties as assigned.

Marginal Functions

1. Assists all employees of the Park District where and when needed. 2. Assists with maintenance and repairs at assigned facilities.

Psychological Considerations

The Lifeguard may feel stress from being held responsible for their assigned facilities/programs. The Lifeguard must resolve differences and problems that arise with patrons and employees.

Environmental Considerations

Lifeguards may be exposed to odors from cleaning supplies and pool chemicals. Lifeguard's skin is exposed to chlorinated water. When guarding indoors those conditions include lighting and temperature.

Cognitive Considerations

The Lifeguard must exhibit good problem-solving ability, use good judgment, have good safety awareness and must be able to follow directions from their supervisor with safe follow through.

Recommendations For Accommodations

1. Workers are allowed and encouraged to use mechanical or manual assists for lifting over fifty (50) lbs. as a guideline. Working in teams will also allow workers to have assistance with heavier equipment. 2. Other situations requiring accommodations would need to be analyzed more specifically.

Compensation

The starting wage for this position is $15.00/hour. Part-time employees with certain restrictions, are entitled to free use of District facilities during public hours.
