Evaluated by: Athletic Director & Aquatics Director Evaluation period: Annual

Purpose of the Position: Oversees the safety of students and patrons swimming in the MHS Aquatics Center including lifesaving procedures.

Responsibilities:

• Protects the safety of swimmers and keeps attention on the swimmers at all times when on duty.
• Enforces all pool rules in the water, on the pool deck, in the locker rooms, and in the stands.
• Performs any necessary emergency procedures and first aid.
• Attends all in-service training sessions.
• Attends all required staff meetings.
• Substitutes for fellow staff members.
• Checks safety equipment at the beginning of each shift.
• Carefully completes accident or rescue reports after rendering whatever aid is needed. Notifies the Aquatics Director of serious accidents.
• Fully understands the emergency procedures, pool rules, rescue techniques and first aid. Lifeguards will be expected to demonstrate any of these at any given time.
• Wears a swim suit, staff t-shirt, whistle, and pack while on duty.
• Effectively communicates with the Aquatics Director
• Performs other duties as assigned by the Aquatics Director or administration.
• Must be able to perform and maintain all of the required skill tests of their certification.

Education and/or Experience:

Candidates must be American Red Cross Lifeguard certified or an equivalent lifeguard certification.

Language Skills:

Ability to read and interpret documents, reports, manuals, schedules, and inventories. Ability to speak effectively with the Aquatics Director, coaches, athletes, and guests.

Supervisory Skills:

Ability to supervise swimmers at all times and enforce all pool rules.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, swim, and talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands or arms. The employee is frequently required to sit, stand or walk. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than an average person while performing the duties of this job.

The employee must be able to jump into the water from the edge of the pool deck and be able to perform all rescue saving measures.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move heavy weight. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to problem solve in high stress situations.

Terms of Employment:

Part-time.

Hourly Pay Rate: $13.00 per hour.

The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the Corporation.
