Lead Teacher – District K-5 Language Arts & Social Studies

Position Purpose

The primary responsibility is to coach and mentor classroom teachers to promote teaching and learning best practices, support the implementation of district language arts/social studies initiatives, provide job‑embedded training, and develop instructional skill building to deepen teachers’ understanding of best practices and increase reading achievement for all students. The lead teacher understands content, responsive pedagogy, assessment, and coaching.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Maintain a collection of professional materials related to specialized areas.
• Provide instructional strategies and tools to aid instructional processes.
• Coordinate and provide district‑wide professional development.
• Support schools' continuous improvement of education by serving as the curriculum area specialist.
• Develop and refine curriculum content.
• Lead needs assessment, planning, and coordination of staff development in content areas.
• Collaborate with campus personnel to assist schools with staff development, instructional programs, coaching, and modeling exemplar lessons.
• Assist with development, evaluation, and translation of system‑created assessments.
• Assist principals in curriculum and instructional decisions based on campus needs.
• Disaggregate data to determine instructional needs.
• Lead district curriculum committees for revisions and adoption of new subject materials.
• Support new teachers and professionals with instructional methodology and district curriculum requirements.
• Secure, evaluate, and deliver instructional materials.
• Develop methods and procedures for implementing curriculum, including guides, editing, and revisions.
• Communicate effectively with supervisors, parents, students, and community.
• Encourage and support implementation of technology in classroom settings.
• Plan summer‑school education programs in specialized areas.
• Create an open, cooperative environment for effective communication.
• Collaborate with departmental and administrative personnel.
• Demonstrate high expectations for students and staff.
• Articulate vision for district program and support district mission and goals.
• Monitor instructional program activities, research programs, and analyze for implementation.
• Orient new teachers and provide professional growth opportunities.
• Engage community and civic groups, submit information to Communications Department.
• Design regular lead‑teacher professional development aligned with district goals.
• Assist teachers in linking best practices to standards.
• Promote parental and community involvement.
• Improve leadership skills through professional activities, committees, conferences.
• Perform other duties as assigned by higher administration.

Minimum Qualifications – Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Thorough knowledge of curricular area requirements and NCDPI curriculum.
• Knowledge of district board policies, procedures, and legislative requirements.
• Ability to provide recommendations for improvement to teachers and administrators.
• Ability to support teachers in problem resolution and professional growth.
• Ability to establish and maintain supportive relationships with principals, teachers, and support personnel.
• Ability to facilitate development and implementation of curriculum guides with core benchmarks, resources, instructional strategies, timelines, articulation maps, and common assessments aligned to state requirements.
• Ability to develop programs of study, evaluate textbooks and supplementary materials.
• Ability to work horizontally and vertically with other lead teachers for alignment.
• Extensive knowledge of current literature, trends, methods, and developments in curricular areas.
• Knowledge of ethical guidelines applicable to the position under professional organizations and laws.
• Knowledge of NC Standards.
• Leadership and support for effective instructional strategies grounded in research.
• Knowledge of best practices, adaptive learning, and professional development programs.

Education, Training & Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Language Arts, Social Studies, Curriculum Development, or related field.
• Five (5) years of teaching experience.
• Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Certification and License Requirements

• NC Teacher Certification in related field.
• Valid driver’s license issued by the NC Department of Motor Vehicles.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree or higher in Curriculum Development, Public School Administration, or related field.
• Five (5) or more years serving as a public‑school classroom teacher.

Working Conditions

Physical demands: Light physical work, up to 20 pounds of force. Work environment: Indoor and outdoor environments, with direct contact with staff, students, and the public.
