Background
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) defines an operating room (OR) as a place of service specifically equipped and staffed for the sole purpose of performing surgical procedures. Children’s of Alabama is a Level 1 Trauma center that offers a full-service operating room covering Orthopedics, Otolaryngology (ENT), Urology, Neurosurgery, Plastics, Ophthalmology, Oral Surgery, General Surgery, Gastroenterology, Dental, Gynecology, Pulmonary and Transplant Surgery (liver and kidney). An OR team typically includes one surgeon, one anesthesiologist, one nurse anesthetist (CRNA), one circulating nurse, and one scrub nurse or certified scrub technician per patient, providing surgical care in a sterile environment. As a teaching institution, residents, fellows, and physician assistants often participate alongside the core team.
