Job Description:
The Lead, Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for aircraft systems including air conditioning/environmental control, oxygen, water, hydraulic, pressurization, pneumatics, ice protection and interior arrangements. The role involves determining compliance with FAA and Military Airworthiness standards and supporting the organization in establishing airworthiness. The L3Harris ODA is authorized by the FAA to issue findings of compliance to 14 CFR Part 23 and Part 25 regulations as an STC and MRA ODA. The employee will receive training and experience to become an ODA Unit Member within the ODA over an approved period.
Essential Functions:
- Assist in the creation of FAA Certification Plans and identification of applicable FAA regulations for project assignments.
- Review data submitted in support of FAA findings of compliance.
- Participate in a Certification Team environment, contributing to overall certification activity for various Military Commercial Derivative Aircraft.
- Review data in support of Military Certification activities in accordance with defined airworthiness requirements such as MIL‑HDBK‑516C or other customer‑determined standards.
- Support L3Harris Engineering in determining suitable methods to achieve FAA and Military Airworthiness Certification.
- Determine applicability of FAA Advisory Circulars and Policies to projects.
- Assist engineering with development of Special Conditions, Exemptions and Equivalent Level of Safety petitions to the FAA.
- Support Preliminary, Critical, and Final design reviews focused on meeting FAA and Military Certification requirements.
- Act as a focal point for FAA and Airworthiness certification activities.
- Understand engineering principles and applications for aircraft mechanical systems including environmental control systems, oxygen systems, ice protection, pressurization, and hydraulics.
- Review, critique, and provide feedback for engineering technical reports involving analysis and testing of aircraft mechanical systems.
- Apply classical analysis methods for thermal analysis, gaseous, and fluid flow.
- Occasional overtime and travel for company business may be required.
- Obtain and maintain a DoD Clearance.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree with nine (9) years of Mechanical Engineering experience in an aircraft environment.
- Graduate degree with seven (7) years of Mechanical Engineering experience in an aircraft environment.
- In lieu of a degree, a minimum of thirteen (13) years of Mechanical Engineering experience in an aircraft environment.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
Preferred Additional Skills:
- Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering degree.
- Previous experience working on FAA certification projects.
- Knowledge of Military Commercial Derivative Aircraft (MCDA) certification methods and FAA Order A.
- Experience with RTCA/DO‑160 environmental testing.
- Familiarity with MIL‑HDBK‑516C.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
