Lead Installer

Union Office (UOI) is a Boston-based commercial furniture dealership with longstanding alignment with Allsteel/HNI and deep roots in the New England market. We manage end-to-end workplace projects — from programming and design through delivery, installation, and punch list — for clients across corporate, life sciences, education, and government sectors.

Installation is not an afterthought at UOI. It is the moment where every upstream decision — design, specification, project management — either delivers on its promise or doesn’t. The Lead Installer is the person who makes sure it delivers.

About the Role

The Lead Installer / Installation Foreman owns the job site. You are responsible for planning, directing, and executing furniture installation projects from truck arrival to client sign-off — with a team behind you. You set the standard for quality, professionalism, and efficiency on every project you’re assigned.

This is a hands‑on role. You will install alongside other members of the UOI team on most projects while carrying full responsibility for the outcome: schedule adherence, product vs order accuracy, job site conduct, client communication, as well as play a critical part of the punch list resolution process. The measure of a great Lead Installer is that the client signs off clean and the project manager hears nothing but good news.

Responsibilities

• Plan, organize, and deliver exceptional performance on projects ranging from single-office deliveries to large furniture installations
• Set & maintain quality standards throughout the project
• Train and develop less experienced installers — on product knowledge, installation technique, UOI standards, and professional conduct on client sites
• Conduct pre-installation site reviews and participate in project kickoff meetings with project management and general contractors as needed
• Manage crew conduct on site: professional appearance, client‑facing communication, job site cleanliness, and safety compliance at all times
• Deliver, stage, assemble, and install all product lines including systems furniture, casegoods, seating, storage, architectural walls, and ancillary products per Allsteel/HNI and manufacturer specifications
• Read and interpret furniture drawings, floor plans, installation instructions, and work orders accurately before and during each project
• Perform reconfigurations, punch list work, and service calls with the same quality standard as new installations
• Operate a box truck (up to 26’) safely, including lift gate operation; maintain a clean driving record and comply with all DOT requirements

Quality Control & Project Close‑Out

• Inspect all installed product for accuracy against drawings, spec sheets, and client expectations before leaving the job site
• Identify, document, and communicate punch list items to the project manager promptly and accurately
• Manage project close‑out through final client sign-off — including punch list follow‑through and any post-installation service needs
• Complete all required project documentation: time capture, receiving records, change orders, product returns, and punch lists
• Consistently complete projects at or below budgeted labor hours without sacrificing quality
• Work with Warehouse Manager on product delivery prep accuracy

Client & Internal Communication

• Serve as UOI’s professional representative on every job site — interact with clients, general contractors, building management, and trades with competence and courtesy
• Communicate project status to project management & customer service at the start and end of every workday, and flag any issues that arise during the project in real time
• Notify clients, project management, and customer service of arrival time, confirm project scope at the start of each day, and manage any on‑site changes or issues with a solutions‑first approach
• Respond promptly to communications from internal project operations teams

Qualifications

• 5+ years of commercial furniture installation experience; systems furniture (panel systems, benching, ancillary) required
• Ability to gain clearance via background checks for government contracted business
• Ability to read and interpret furniture drawings, floor plans, and work orders accurately
• Proficiency with hand and power tools; mechanically adept with strong problem‑solving ability in field conditions
• Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record; ability to safely operate a box truck up to 26’ with lift gate
• Physical strength and stamina: ability to lift and move furniture and equipment regularly, including items exceeding 75 lbs.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills — professional with clients, contractors, and crew members at all levels
• Punctual, accountable, and self‑directed — able to manage a full project day without supervision

Preferred Skills

• Experience installing Allsteel, HNI, Steelcase, MillerKnoll, Haworth, or comparable commercial furniture product lines
• Familiarity with architectural wall systems
• Basic knowledge of electrical hookups for furniture components (power modules, hardwired workstations)
• Experience with furniture management or field documentation apps (smartphone/tablet-based)
• Ability to work occasional early morning, evening, or weekend shifts for project schedule requirements
