Lead Field Service TechnicianWe're looking for a Lead Field Service Technician with extensive field experience and leadership capability to support electrical system projects across the U.S. In this hands-on role, you'll lead field crews, execute testing and commissioning plans, and troubleshoot complex issues in power plants, substations, and industrial facilities. You'll take ownership of day-to-day site operations and play a key role in mentoring technicians while ensuring quality and safety in the field.What You'll Do:Lead testing and maintenance on LV to HV systems (480V–600kV), including breakers (air, SF6, vacuum), relays, cables, motor controls, and transformersRun advanced diagnostics using Power Factor, Tan Delta, VLF, DC Hi-Pot, Doble, TTR, winding resistance, insulation resistance, and contact resistance testsPerform and validate electromechanical, solid-state, and microprocessor relay testingOversee test plan execution and commissioning procedures for new systems, retrofits, and upgradesSupervise onsite field crews—delegate tasks, mentor technicians, and uphold technical and safety standardsEnforce compliance with project specifications, Lockout/Tagout, PPE, and job hazard analysis requirementsFollow strict safety and PPE usage protocols due to noise, electrical hazards, and elevated work areasMaintain accurate test reports, service records, and commissioning documentationServe as the lead field contact for clients—communicate status updates and coordinate project requirementsOversee the care and readiness of test gear, vehicles, and toolsDirect emergency response, shutdowns, and start-ups with minimal supervisionCoach and support junior team members through on-the-job mentorshipThe Experience We're Looking For:10+ years of experience in power plant, utility, or industrial power systemsNETA Level III or IV strongly preferred; journeyman or equivalent advanced credentials also acceptedExpert-level experience with protection & control systems, relay testing, and high-voltage commissioningSkilled in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams) and PowerDB for documentationAbility to lead teams, delegate tasks, and make sound decisions under pressureThorough knowledge of NETA standards and safety regulationsAdditional Requirements:Willingness to travel at least 75%, including overnight stays and flexible schedulingHigh school diploma or GED requiredValid driver's licenseMust successfully complete a background check and pre-employment/random drug testsAvailable for flexible hours, overtime, and occasional weekends, holidays, or nightsAble to work outdoors in all weather, at heights (100+ ft), in confined spaces, and around high-voltage equipment and heavy machineryPhysically capable of lifting 50+ lbs and enduring extended physical activityRequires good vision, hearing, and English proficiency for safe, effective communication in noisy environmentsAnnual safety training may require travel outside your assigned regionBonus Points for:NETA Level IV certification or recognized expert-level credentialsCompletion of a trade school program, technical college, associate degree, or skilled trade certification in welding or a related field is strongly preferredTWIC cardExperience leading commissioning crews and mentoring junior techniciansDeep familiarity with power plant environments and substation retrofitsWhy Join RMS Energy: We're not just another power services company.
