Location: Richmond, CA, with some days in Antioch, CA
Pay: $135,000- $150,000 salary

Brighter Beginnings is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that has been responding to the needs of families in resource‑poor neighborhoods since 1984, recognizing the alarming differences in mortality and illness rates among African American babies compared to other children. The organization has grown into a respected and well‑connected community with locations in Oakland, Richmond, Bay Point, and Antioch, staffed by passionate, culturally and bilingual professionals.

Position Summary

The Lead Family Nurse Practitioner (LFNP) will support our NPs with training and other administrative duties as designated by the supervisor, and provide direct patient care.

Qualifications

  • A valid license to practice as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) in California, with the ability to sign prescriptions and furnish medications.
  • Master’s Degree or higher.
  • National Board certification (ANCC or AANPCB) NP‑C certification required.
  • Certificate of completion from an accredited nurse practitioner program.
  • Experienced FamilyNP with a minimum of 3 years as a NP.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • Current DEA License or Eligible.
  • Valid California driver’s license and proof of auto insurance.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the rationale of appropriate patient care.
  • Demonstrate the ability to maintain good interpersonal relationships with co‑workers and health team members.
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, data entry, and use of business email.
  • Passed physical exam and TB test.

Responsibilities

Primary Job Functions

  • Primary care provider: complete patient history, physical examinations, diagnosis, and treatment plans for primary, secondary, and tertiary care services in accordance with standardized NPP and PA protocols.
  • Communicate with patients or guardians regarding care plans, results of diagnostic studies, and answer questions; organize and deliver health education, including preventive health information and disease‑specific education.
  • Coordinate patient referrals for specialized health care to public health agencies.
  • Review patient files to account for allergies, problems, medications, and immunization status.
  • Order or execute various tests, analyses, and diagnostic images to provide information on a patient’s condition.
  • Analyze reports and findings, diagnose patient conditions.
  • Administer or prescribe treatments.
  • Determine and prescribe medication, dosage, and schedule given the patient’s condition and allergies.
  • Prescribe vaccinations to immunize patients against communicable diseases.
  • Provide prenatal care to pregnant women, and postnatal care to mothers and infants.
  • Perform the following services or be willing to learn:
    • Minor surgery (toenail removal, mole and cyst removal, foreign object removal, etc.)
    • Suturing
    • General orthopedic evaluations/management
    • Basic rehabilitation for musculoskeletal injuries
    • General internal medicine, family medicine, and pediatrics
    • General dermatology
    • General eye problems
    • General EKG interpretations
    • Emergency management skills
    • General GYN expertise
    • Communicate quality care and treatment issues with the Medical Doctor
    • Conduct clinical pertinence chart review studies to assess patient outcomes
    • Serve as a resource for community agencies
    • Use technology tools for research, data entry, record keeping, and business communication via email
  • Meet all clinical obligations: accrediting agency compliance, CLIA, drug prescription compliance, HIPAA, state and federal regulations, safety regulations, etc.
  • Follow all internal policies and procedures; be accountable for completion of operational tasks per departmental guidelines.
  • See patients in a timely and efficient manner, maintaining schedule unless exceptional circumstances occur.
  • Ensure proper coding and appropriate charging for services rendered to sustain financial viability.
  • Chart patient records within 48 hours of visit; maintain confidential medical records.
  • Communicate with the Director of Primary Care & Quality, reporting on the functioning of the BBFHC; the Director reports to the CEO and partner agencies.

Administrative Job Functions

  • Support NPs with training and administrative duties as designated by the supervisor.
  • Provide procedural instruction to clinicians on site and clinical support to providers focusing on Richmond, but able to visit both sites.
  • Check in weekly or bi‑weekly with newly hired clinician staff per the CMO’s determination.
  • Work closely with the CMO and clinic managers to improve health clinic services and coordination of care with partner agencies.
  • Demonstrate ongoing support and respect for administration in all communications.
  • Address administrative issues directly and in private with those concerned.
  • Manage time: routinely see patients within the allotted time, adjusting to daily patient flow while staying on schedule.
  • Meet a minimum caseload of 18‑20 patients per day during an 8‑hour shift, and respond to unforeseen circumstances and emergency care.
  • Report to the Medical Doctor and designees.
  • Complete patient charts and submit medical bills daily.
  • Be flexible, adapt to change, and serve as a role model for staff.
  • Comply with all HIPAA rules and regulations.

Supervisory Job Functions

The position administratively supervises NPs and PAs with support of our MD for clinical supervision of RNs.

Special ADA Requirements

  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/clinic work environment, with typical office noise and other disruptions.
  • Limited physical effort is required.
  • Both standing and sitting are required, most of the time spent sitting; approximately three‑quarters of the time is spent using a computer keyboard.
  • Various types of clinic equipment/supplies are used, including pens, pencils, calculators, computer keyboards, telephones, printers, etc.
  • Required to drive to other work sites for meetings, conferences, etc.
