Responsibilities
- Complete tour and watch according to the CBS/JFRC Tour and Watch Plan following the frequencies stated in the Watch Engineer position description.
- Report deficiencies found and corrective action taken during building tour to Assistant Chief Engineer and Follow-on Watch Engineer.
- Act as senior technical representative during after-hour shift, responding to emergency calls and taking appropriate action to identify the problem and correct it without compromising watch responsibilities, calling on-duty mechanic for support when needed.
- Operate and monitor emergency generators (3-2000 kW) and monitor voltage of main switchgear room and four substations throughout the building.
- Maintain mechanical and electrical rooms and associated equipment in a clean and orderly condition.
- Perform quality-control inspections of all systems, preventive maintenance, and service as required during shift.
- Monitor, test, and assure appropriate water-treatment levels according to predetermined set points prescribed by the water treatment vendor.
- Provide guidance, operate, and maintain one or more systems supplying JFRC heat, air-conditioning (cool, humidify, dehumidify, filter, and circulate air), refrigeration, steam or high-temperature water, and electricity.
- Observe and interpret readings on gauges, meters and charts registering various aspects of system operation; adjust controls to ensure safe and efficient operation and meet demands for the service provided.
- Record in logs the various aspects of system operation and complete tour and watch logs properly, accurately and in a timely manner.
- Oversee, operate, monitor, and maintain the JFRC boiler plant, chiller plant and lab utility equipment on a 24 x 7 x 365 basis according to the CBS/JFRC Tour and Watch Plan.
- Provide continuous support and oversight of monitoring facility operating systems using available building automation systems (Siemens EMCS, power monitoring systems, Lutron lighting system, etc.).
- Conduct scheduled tours of boiler plant, chiller plant, and lab utility equipment and exercise ultimate authority for all actions during watch duties.
Qualifications
- Minimum of seven (7) years of experience working in a high-pressure steam plant with a minimum of 500 boiler horsepower.
- Minimum of five (5) years experience working with centrifugal chillers of 750 tons or greater.
- Education: 3rd class District of Columbia Steam Engineer’s license or equivalent experience; high-school diploma or equivalent required.
- 300 hours of post-high-school trade school education.
- Managerial experience.
- Computer proficient.
- Advanced knowledge of DDC control systems.
- Training and experience usually acquired through a formal apprenticeship or equivalent training and experience.
Schedule
All shifts: 8 am–4 pm, 3 pm–11 pm, 11 pm–7 am (Monday–Friday).
Salary
$52.66 per hour.
