The Lead Data Scientist will drive battery intelligence efforts at LG Energy Solution Vertech Inc, focusing on research, design, and deployment of Battery State Estimation algorithms using advanced AI/ML and statistical methods. This is a hands-on role that leads the movement of models from R&D into production to support value creation for a BESS fleet, based in Westborough, MA (hybrid).
Key Responsibilities
- Own end-to-end development of AI-driven battery state estimation algorithms (State of Energy/Charge/Power/Health), from initial R&D and prototyping through production deployment.
- Apply deep knowledge of BESS, spanning individual cell-level physics and system-level topology.
- Design, build, and deploy AI/ML state estimation models to predict energy availability, supporting optimal BESS trading strategies.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including product, energy market analysts, engineering, and DevOps to define requirements, integrate models into production pipelines, and deliver scalable, cloud-integrated data products.
- Monitor and incorporate state-of-the-art Gen-AI/AI/ML/Deep Learning methods from current literature.
- Lead the transition of AI/ML models from research to production, with an emphasis on robust, scalable, and efficient software development practices.
- Act as an AI/ML leader and mentor for junior team members and contribute to the AI/Data Science team roadmap.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree in computer science, Data Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related quantitative discipline.
- 10–15 years of relevant industry experience in AI/ML, data science, battery algorithms, or advanced state estimation, including demonstrated technical leadership for algorithm-development teams.
- Strong hands-on Python development with production-grade software development practices.
- Deep understanding of machine learning (supervised, semi-supervised, unsupervised), deep learning algorithms, and statistical modeling.
- Proficiency working with large-scale datasets using Pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn, and SQL.
- Proficiency with deep learning frameworks including TensorFlow and PyTorch.
- Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, GCP, Databricks, or Snowflake.
- Proficiency using Linux and Git for version control.
- Proficiency in MLOps and CI/CD pipelines, including integrating ML models into DevOps workflows.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across global teams.
- Legal authorization to work in the U.S. without employer sponsorship.
- Ability to mentor junior team members and participate in technical roadmap discussions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) and Battery Management Systems (BMS).
- Understanding of different Li-ion battery cell chemistries, such as NCM and LFP.
