Lead Counsel – Capital One Shopping

CapitalShopping operates a browser extension and a mobile application that provides users with online shopping coupons, rewards, customized offers, and price comparison tools within CapitalOne’s RetailBank and PremiumProducts andExperiences business. We are seeking a Senior Director to lead the legal support for this high‑growth business. The role serves as lead business counsel for CapitalShopping, leading a team of 3‑4 attorneys who support all aspects of the business, leveraging our existing network of engaged outside counsel and internal subject matter experts.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide strategic, clear and contextualized legal advice to business development, marketing, operations, product development, and tech teams on a variety of complex issues and topics.
• Translate applicable laws, regulations, and legal requirements into actionable advice.
• Develop and maintain legal resources for products, such as terms of service and other disclosures.
• Help design and implement legal department and compliance processes to keep up with growth.
• Build relationships and collaborate with business stakeholders across Capital One.
• Understand business needs and provide appropriate solutions.
• Work autonomously and collaboratively within the Legal Department.

Basic Qualifications

• Juris Doctor from an accredited law school.
• Active member in good standing of at least one state bar.
• At least 10 years of experience as an attorney in a law firm, in‑house legal department, or government agency.
• At least 5 years of people‑leadership experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• 12+ years of experience in a law firm, in‑house legal department, or government agency.
• 7+ years of people‑leadership experience.
• Experience in affiliate marketing.
• Experience in software.
• Experience advising technology or financial services companies on marketing, regulatory, or product development matters.
• Ability to build collegial and effective relationships with attorneys, business managers, creative teams, analysts, project managers, and corporate compliance professionals.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to influence others.

Salary and Incentives

At this time, CapitalOne will not sponsor a new applicant for employment authorization for this position. This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non‑discretionary depending on the plan.

• NewYork, NY: $294,100 – $335,700
• Plano, TX: $245,100 – $279,800
• Richmond, VA: $245,100 – $279,800
