The Office of Cannabis Management is currently seeking to hire two Law Clerks to provide legal review and support services relating to the regulatory oversight and rulemaking aspects of the office. Law Clerks will learn about attorney-client privilege and Minnesota Chapter 13 (MN Government Data Practices Act). Appointments are expected to last approximately ten (10) weeks but may be extended across semesters and to full-time hours in the summer. These positions are located in St. Paul and may telework from home two (2) days per week and is expected to be in the office three (3) days per week.

This job posting will be used to fill multiple positions.

A successful incumbent in this position will be able to:

  • Research state level cannabis environments

  • Draft memorandums and legal documents

  • Participate in meetings and work groups related to legal research assignments

Minimum Qualifications

To facilitate proper years of service crediting, please ensure that your resume clearly describes your experience in the areas listed and indicates the beginning and ending month and year for each job held.

  • Currently enrolled in a JD program and completed at least one year of study at an ABA approved law school

  • Excellent research and writing skills (writing sample will be requested of applicants invited for an interview)

To be eligible for appointment as a student worker, you must be a student enrolled in an educational program. Students may be "off" for the summer or for one semester/quarter and remain employed as student workers, but such absences cannot exceed one semester/quarter in a year. As a student, you must be enrolled in high school or in a post-secondary or graduate program. If a student is enrolled at a credit-granting institution, they must carry at least six semester (nine quarter) credits. If enrolled at a non-credit granting institution, or one that only offers one credit per class, a student must be taking two or more classes per semester/quarter. Any lesser credit (class) load shall be treated as a semester/quarter off. Graduate students must be enrolled in at least two courses or making progress on a dissertation. You will be asked to complete an education verification form prior to appointment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in Law Review or another legal journal

  • Experience with Westlaw, Lexis Nexis, or other legal research tools

  • Coursework in administrative law, public policy, business, statutory interpretation, agriculture, cannabis, and/or food safety

  • An interest in working in state government, rulemaking, and/or cannabis
