Laboratory Manager - New York City Area

Key Responsibilities

• Lead day‑to‑day activities within the research laboratory, ensuring operation of crucial equipment and adequate supplies for routine procedures.
• Review budgets and other resources as needed.
• Act as liaison between the lab and HHMI or host institution administrative offices on budget management, fixed‑asset inventories, purchasing, and host account usage.
• Coordinate with host safety and regulatory offices to ensure compliance with all regulations.
• Develop laboratory guidelines, maintain procedural manuals, and evaluate new materials, equipment, techniques, and technology.
• Train incoming personnel in appropriate lab conduct and technical procedures.
• Provide working supervision to Research Technicians or other junior laboratory personnel.
• Assist or carry out research projects as required.

Qualifications

• Education: Bachelor’s degree in health or physical sciences, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience. Advanced degree is a plus.
• Experience: Three or more years of laboratory experience, including at least one year of supervisory experience.
• Operational knowledge of advanced lab equipment.
• Ability to supervise others and develop instructional material for routine training.
• Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
• In‑depth understanding of organizational structure within the work unit and the broader organization.
• Ability to review goals, analyze processes, and develop techniques and systems to meet objectives.

Physical Requirements

Maintain a normal seated or standing position for extended periods; reach and grasp with hands or arms; manipulate objects with fingers; communicate verbally; see and hear within normal parameters; move materials weighing several pounds. The position may involve exposure to mild odorous vapors, low‑dose radiation, and potentially hazardous chemicals or acids.

Compensation and Benefits

Laboratory Manager I – $73,255.00 (minimum) – $91,500.00 (midpoint) – $118,910.00 (maximum). Pay type: Annual. Compensation is based on market data, education, experience, skills, and internal consistency. Employees receive competitive pay, health benefits, retirement plans, time off, and wellness programs.
