Laboratory Instructors: Occupational Therapy Assistant Program – Part‑time

Virginia Western Community College, School of Health Professions, 70‑acre campus in southwest Roanoke, VA.

Position Summary

Provide instruction and supervision in a laboratory setting for students in the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program. May assist with mentorship, orientation, remediation, and occasional emergency duties.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide instruction and supervision in laboratory settings.
• Assist with mentorship, orientation, and remediation of students.
• Plan and organize laboratory teaching activities according to student level.
• Facilitate student learning experiences to ensure mastery of stated objectives.
• Evaluate student learning as described in program assessments.
• Maintain student safety and adhere to regulatory requirements.
• Attend all lab sessions punctually and communicate any emergencies affecting attendance.
• Submit all required documentation on time.
• Assist with other duties as assigned and with agency or state emergency responses if required.

Required Qualifications

• AAS in a specific healthcare discipline.
• Current Virginia license in the specific discipline.
• Up‑to‑date continuing education compliance.
• Two years of clinical experience in the professional discipline.
• Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Ability to work with students of varying abilities from diverse backgrounds.
• Strong planning and organizational skills.
• Effective communication with program faculty.
• Facilitate student learning experiences and assess learning outcomes.
• Ensure student safety and meet all regulatory requirements for supervision.
• Ability to function as a registered health professional and educator.
• Model positive healthcare professional culture.
• Adapt instruction and communication for diverse learners.
• Meet physical demands of laboratory teaching schedule.
• Proficiency with program‑specific skills and equipment.
• Maintain confidentiality of student and program information.

Preferred Experience

• Experience working with clients with physical disabilities (including pediatric, youth, and adult populations).
• Experience working in pediatric clinical settings.
• Experience treating patients with developmental disabilities.
• Experience with assistive technologies and devices.
• Knowledge of kinesiology concepts.

Additional Considerations

• Bachelor’s degree.
• Prior teaching experience, preferable in a college setting.
• Experience using classroom technology.
