Position Description

Position: Histocompatibility Laboratory Associate Director in the Immunogenetics and Transplantation Laboratory (ITL), Division of Transplant Surgery, Department of Surgery, University of California, San Francisco.

The Department is seeking an outstanding candidate to serve as the Histocompatibility Laboratory Associate Director for its state‑of‑the‑art histocompatibility laboratory. The candidate must have an MD and/or PhD, be certified by the American College of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ACHI), and be licensed/eligible in the State of California for the position. The laboratory supports a large solid organ and bone marrow transplant program and offers one of the most advanced molecular histocompatibility testing programs in the region. The Associate Director will work closely with the Director of the laboratory.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate expertise in serological and molecular histocompatibility testing using high‑throughput systems and flow cytometry.
  • Administer quality systems, supervise technical and administrative staff, and manage laboratory operations.
  • Consult with laboratory clients such as transplant surgeons and hematopoietic stem cell transplant physicians.
  • Engage in research, securing independent funding and contributing to immunology and transplantation knowledge.
  • Educate surgery residents and medical students, participating actively in residency and educational programs.
  • Serve as a teacher and mentor within the Department’s training objectives.

Qualifications

  • MD and/or PhD or equivalent degree.
  • Certification by the American College of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ACHI).
  • License or eligibility in the State of California to serve as the Histocompatibility Laboratory Associate Director.
  • Proven expertise in serological and molecular histocompatibility testing, high‑throughput instrumentation, and flow cytometry.
  • Experience in quality systems administration and personnel management.
  • Strong teaching and educational experience with surgical residents and medical students.
  • Research background with independent funding; expertise in immunology, transplantation, and related areas.

Salary

The posted UC salary scales set the minimum pay based on rank and step at appointment. Minimum base salary range: $150,200 – $319,800. The position includes membership in the health sciences compensation plan, providing eligibility for additional compensation.
