IP Litigation Counsel
HP is seeking an IP Litigation Counsel to lead high‑stakes patent litigation and other litigation matters with significant legal, financial, and business impact. This role is designed for an experienced patent litigator with demonstrated trial capability and proven experience leading complex patent litigation, as well as judgment and credibility to lead commercial disputes and government investigations where needed.
This role is based in either Houston, Spring, or Vancouver and follows a hybrid work schedule, requiring employees to work in the office three days per week.
This is a judgment driven role with autonomy.
Responsibilities
- Lead complex litigation matters through all phases, including trial, with responsibility for litigation strategy, risk assessment, and outcome scenarios.
- Own significant patent litigation matters, including technically complex, expert‑driven cases, as well as complex commercial litigation matters, and government investigations.
- Retain, manage, and closely partner with outside counsel, including staffing, strategy, fee arrangements, and performance accountability.
- Manage budgets for matters in scope, including forecasting, accruals, reserves, and executive level reporting on litigation spend and exposure.
Required Qualifications
- J.D. from an accredited law school and active bar membership in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
- 7+ years of litigation experience, reflecting progressive responsibility for complex, high‑stakes matters.
- Demonstrated trial experience, including trying cases to verdict.
- Proven experience leading complex patent litigation matters, including technically complex, expert‑driven cases.
- Strong judgment and ability to operate independently in a fast‑paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience handling commercial litigation and/or class actions in addition to patent litigation.
- Experience advising business leaders on litigation risk, settlement posture, and trial exposure.
- Experience managing outside counsel, litigation budgets, reserves, and related financial reporting.
- Experience at a top‑tier firm.
- In‑house experience in a litigation management role.
Compensation
The pay range for this role is $165,450 to $259,750 USD annually with additional opportunities for pay in the form of bonus and/or equity (applies to United States of America candidates only). Pay varies by work location, job‑related knowledge, skills, and experience.
